The Mets on Zito

MetsBlog.com quotes Omar Minaya on the Barry Zito deal. Minaya was not willing to go longer than five years for a pitcher, sound thinking.

Sounds like someone learned a lesson from the Pedro contract.

It's OK not to have signed Zito, but there needed to have been a Plan B. Let's hope there really is a Plan B since the current expected rotation is not a World Series contender's rotation!!

since the current expected rotation is not a World Series contender's rotation!!

This rotation was a Carlos Beltran gapper from the World Series. Yes, it's true that Glavine and El Duque are a year older, and Maine and Perez could have had merely fluky post-season performances, but in that league, the starting staff is one of a WS contender, though largely because of the lineup and bullpen supporting it.

Of course that's not to say that I'm comfrotable standing pat. There are a lot of question marks, and who knows if the lineup can be as productive again next year, or if the pen can be as good. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if a trade needs to be made during the off-season.

That must be it JB, since Pedro is signed for at least 7 years. There's always a Plan B, the concern is that it sucks. Regarding the rotation, it had holes with Zito penciled in, so yeah, it's well short now.

It's hard to fault Minaya for balking at a 7-year contract for a starting pitcher -- especially one with diminishing peripheral stats. Long-term pitcher contracts are almost always a losing proposition.

On the other hand, he's built an expensive, "win now" lineup, and he doesn't have the pitching to complement it. Still lots of time to implement Plan B... or even wait till midseason to see which teams are dumping salaries.
