Golfing Buddy

The Giants signed Ryan Klesko so that Bruce Bochy won't lose his golfing partner:

In the meantime, the Giants roster continues to take shape. Bochy stumped hard for Klesko, a personal friend and golfing buddy who played in just six games last season because of left shoulder surgery.

"He's fully endorsed by our manager, as a lot of our acquisitions have been, and that's why he's here," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

Klesko will see time in left field and at first base, where he could work himself into a platoon with Rich Aurilia and make Sweeney expendable. (Klesko's deal would see him make up to $2 million more in performance bonuses based on plate appearances.) Bochy said he still considers Aurilia the primary first baseman, but "it's always going to stay competitive."

Maybe if the Giants can't work out the language in Bonds' contract, Ryan can play left full time! Right now, the Giants staters look like this (2007 seasonal ages):

  • C -- Benjie Molina, 31
  • 1B -- Rich Aurilia, 35
  • 1B -- Ryan Klesko, 36
  • 2B -- Ray Durham, 35
  • 3B -- Pedro Feliz, 31
  • SS -- Omar Vizquel, 40
  • LF -- Barry Bonds, 42
  • CF -- Dave Roberts, 35
  • RF -- Randy Winn, 33

Counting the 1B platoon as 35.5, that makes the average age of the starting lineup 35.3 years. The one good young player they own is Frandsen, and he's behind two of the better players on the team. I just wonder what the long term plans for this team are? Will they keep signing vets to maintain the semblance of a competitive team? Or at some point, do they tear the whole thing down and start over? The first option is what Gene Autry did with the Angels for years. It got them nowhere. The second is what Cleveland did earlier this decade, and what Florida did last year. I'd rather see the Giants do the latter. It's cheaper and likely yields better results.

The great thing about this is that with two low to mid 30s in the outfield, they may actually be on a youth movement.

It's not just that they have old players - they have old players who are really declining. Roberts was great last year, but no way he keeps it up. And he rarely bats against lefties. And he's really not a center fielder.
Winn looked done last year. At his best, he was an average outfielder in every facet of the game - hit for a decent average, ran well, a little power, a slightly above average OBP. He parlayed a half season of playing out of his mind into a 3 year deal, and last year just tanked. He had no bat speed and was terribly miscast as a leadoff hitter. There comes a point where you really can't have a guy with a 324 obp and a 396 slg start in right field, and the quicker the Giants realize this the better off they'll be.
I don't understand why they don't just play Klesko at first and Aurilia at 3rd. Feliz is dead weight.
Molina is no better than Matheny, and who knows what Bonds will give this year? 100 walks is nice, but not when the guy can't run and nobody batting behind him can hit. If the Giants bat Feliz after Bonds you might see an all-time GIDP record, but that's about it.
It seems that the Giants are simply postponing the inevitable, setting themselves up for another 78 win season in order to provide Bonds the HR record and avoid the 100-loss season that's coming soon.

For every Florida Marlin, there is an equal and opposite SF Giant. Sigh.

Actually, as a Dodger fan, I'm more than happy to see the Giants overspend on creaky old-timers.

And the Giants are in a bidding war with the Yankees for Cy Young.

If the Giants weren't in the NL West, they might have stopped this nonsense years ago. Their division is so mediocre that they can keep patching with old players, and reasonably expect to contend. If they were in, say, the AL East or Central, they would have long ago faced the necessity of retooling.

Then again, I believe Sabean has a track record of downplaying the role of young talent. So maybe he would have pursued the same strategy no matter what -- he just would have been a failure.

It is interesting to see what they are doing to the Club Up North... As a lifelong padres fan, I was very sad to see Bochy go... and I'm glad Klesko landed himself a job, but I have to agree with Adam - I'm happy to see the Giants fill their roster with old timers and no pitching. Now if those stinkin' dodgers would just throw some more of THEIR money away on losers too...

There will likely be another platoon in the Giants lineup in addition to Klesko and Aurilia at 1B. Effectively Roberts and Linden will platoon. Winn will move to CF when Linden comes in to play against lefties for Roberts. So, the Giants will also have a 26 year old in the lineup mix that you failed to account for.

In addition, I expect Sweeney to sub for Barry when Barry rests against righties and Frandsen to in sub for Barry when Barry rests against lefties by moving Feliz to left field. Both Linden and Frandsen will get significant ABs in 2007 to get their feet wet and if they prove to have the what it takes (as I expect they will) they will earn starting jobs for 2008.

Where the Giants are young and promising is in pitching. If the Giants complete their offseason by being the highest bidder in the Zito sweepstakes (as I expect they will) the Giants could have one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball. If they do this they can afford to let Lincemum get his feet wet in 2007 as the closer ala Paplebom in 2006 and put Sanchez in the pen ala Santana in the early 2000's. This single move would significantly strenghten both the rotation and the bullpen and make the Giants serious contenders in 2007.

I really like the following Rotation and Bullpen:

Rotation: Zito/Cain/Lowry/Morris/Hennessey

Bullpen: Closer-Lincecum, Righty-Correia, Righty-Chulk, Righty-Wilson, Lefty-Kline, Lefty-Sanchez, Lefty-Taschner

We can DFA Bentiez and Worrell for all I care!

Bonds in LF, Roberts in CF? Clearly the strategy against the Giants in 2007 is hit the ball in the air to the left side of the diamond.

Klesko actually isn't a bad pickup at the price. He looked terrific when he finally came off the DL last year. Of course, he wasn't asked to play the field...

Giantsrainman,
I fully support your optimism - every team needs homers(fans, that is). But come on - the Giants arent getting Zito, Morris is pretty much a disaster waiting to happen, and Hennesy is spotty. Lincecum isn't going to be the closer to start the season - he's good, but a year removed from college. He's not THAT good. And saving games for a 75 win team isn't going to be good experience.
And replacing Bonds with either Sweeney or Feliz, for even one game a week, is a major loss for the Giants - every time they have to do it next year is a bad situation. Feliz is an awful hitter and Sweeney can't play left and is best cast as a pinch-hitter. To argue that putting those guys on the field is a plus is beyond rational thinking.
The Giants, as currently assembled, are a worse team than they were 3 months ago - all their principal starters are older, All three of their outfielders are flawed (Barry is old, Roberts can't possibly top 06, and Winn was absolutely terrible last year and not getting any younger)
Anytime your tteam has to decide between Ryan Klesko and Rich Aurilia for a premier offensive spot, it's bad news.

Yeah, if the Giants could do what Cleveland and Florida it would be great. Just one little problem. You need to have a quality farm system.
