Angel in the Pen

The Boston Red Sox pick up Brenden Donnelly from the Angels in exchange for a career minor leaguer. For someone who didn't pitch in the majors until he was 30, Donnelly's had a very good career. Fire Brand of the American League likes the deal. It's a case of the Angels trading a known quantity for a younger unknown.

so the Sox got him for a career minor leaguer ? what a rip-off. The phillies offered Jon Leiber to the pirates for Salomen Torress and we were shot down. you mean the angels wouldnt have taken that ? that's the best they could get for Donnelly ?
why trade a very nice reliever to a team they may be fighting with for a wild card spot ? Curses to the Evil Empire that is the Boston Red Sox.

Picking up both Donnelly and J.C. Romero. One of them possibly for a short-term closer?

Does Donnelly's favorite pine tar reservoir also come in the deal, or will that be a second transaction?

JC Romero sucked really bad last year. He'll fit right in with the rest of the Sox's middle relievers from last season.

It seems like a steal for the Sox and a salary dump for the Angels. Indeed, it looks so lopsided it makes me wonder: the Angels have been really good at building bullpens in recent years. If they're trading Donnelly for a career minor leaguer, are they convinced he's near the end of his road?

More like Donnelly actually wanted out. Although he did lose velocity on his fastball last year, he still had a good year, 6-0 with sub 4.00 ERA i think. I think he was unhappy about losing the job as primary setup man to Scott Shields. Plus, the signing of Justin Spier didn't help either. I think this was a decent pick up by the Sox. However, J.C. Romero still has me unconvinced. He had serious control issues last year. I think he was half decent against lefties though, maybe if the Red Sox use him as a lefty specialist, they might have some sort of a bounce back season from him. I can't really blame the Sox for making these moves, at least they're trying to do something about their bullpen issues.
