Braving the Elements
Jay's Giants Blog prints a great story about the extreme of weather baseball fans once endured at Candelstick Park.
As far as warm weather fans being soft, I attended a game at BankOne (now Chase) a few years ago. It was in late May, so by the time the game started, the outside temperature was 85 degrees Farenheit. The Diamondbacks opened the roof to let in a gentle breeze, prompting some women in the crowd to don sweaters. I guess it was a dry cold.

When you get to be 117 years old, you gotta take care not to catch a chill. Desert nights. Holla!
re: candlestick park
candlestick park exemplifed the mark twain saying that the coldest winter he ever had was one summer in san francisco.
seriously, the wind would swirl, it would get seriously cold, it was really hard to hit homers there, strange strange weather, a truly weird place to play a ballgame.
Probably cost Willie Mays his shot at Babe Ruth. If Mays plays in a normal ballpark like Barry Bonds has been doing, Mays passes Ruth no problem.
No comment on the effects on McCovey and Cepeda.

"If Mays plays in a normal ballpark like Barry Bonds has been doing, Mays passes Ruth no problem."
Well Bonds did play half his games at Candlestick for 7 years (i think)...but then again Mays probably wasnt on steroids.
Plus Phone Park or whatever it's called now is consistently rated one of the most difficult parks in which to hit a homer.
