Red Sox Tampering?

The Dodgers may file a grievence against the Red Sox over J.D. Drew:

The Boston Red Sox might still view the New York Yankees as the Evil Empire. But other Major League Baseball people apparently think of the Red Sox as a team that can operate outside of the rules, according to a report in The New York Times.

One unnamed general manager told the newspaper that several people at the recently completed winter meetings urged the Los Angeles Dodgers to file a tampering charge against the Red Sox after veteran J.D. Drew signed with them.

"We haven't reached a decision yet," Ned Colletti, the Dodgers' general manager, told The Times before leaving the winter meetings in Orlando, Fla.

Theo denies the charges. It seems to me Drew opting out of his contract made perfect sense.

It's not the Red Sox's fault that Drew didn't deal with the Dodgers. Ned told him and Boras, there'll be no deal.

Seeing how crazy the market is, can you blame Drew for opting out? Besides, the fans didn't really take to Drew despite his numbers.

Fox Sports is just repeating the NYT. Know who wrote the original article? Murray Chass. He's a hack; half the article is based on the fact that Drew was saying he loved LA right up until the time he voided his contract...like we've never seen players keep saying the right thing and then leave for greener pastures. And the other half is based on "anonymous baseball sources" from other clubs. I'll believe it when I see it.

PS: Even if the Dodgers do file, how are they gonna prove anything? They sorta shot holes in their own case when they gave Juan Pierre $45MM to help jack the market up to new levels of insanity.

Its a factual question where we don't know the facts. I see no reason why Boras wouldn't have understood the developing market and advised Drew he could do better without Red Sox tampering, so I won't assume that tampering happened, but maybe it did. And btw I read the Chass article more as reporting about Dodger thinking (and may those of other GMS) than as making an independent case that tampering happened.

Chass is an Ass. Thats what it comes down to. He doesn't like the Red Sox, so he goes out of his way to manufacture stories to make the team and their GM look bad. If there isn't anything there that won't stop him. He'll just put "annoymous" on it and press the "publish" button. The NY Times was irrisponsible to publish it, and they should print a retraction.

bullcrap, there was obviously tampering. Why would'nt there be? even if the dodgers cant prove it. you dont just walk away from 33 mil with out knowing you will get at least that much back and then some. And Epstein is a huge drew fan, he tried to sign him 2 years ago. Its not possible that boras and epstein could have spoken while drew was still under dodger contract? give me a break. guilty, guilty, guilty.

The dodgers should file and let the chips fall. Theo is a liar and a fool, more monkey suit please. retraction? no. spell check for matty, yes. sox fans need the most love.

excuse me, did you say the dodgers were crazy to sign juan pierre? 45M to a guy who leads off, plays center, hits around .300, steals bases all over and NEVER GETS HURT (162 every year) is nuts, but 70M for JD and his dress is fine? And they tampered to do it? How can coletti stop laughing long enough to sign the paperwork?
