Bean Town Update

It looks like the Red Sox and J.D. Drew are going to work out a deal for five years, $70 million. Not bad given Drew's talent and the price of free agent outfielders this winter. He's taking a hit money wise for his injury history, but he's still getting a long term contract. Meanwhile, it appears real deals are being discussed for Manny Ramirez:

The Sox also remained deep in Manny Ramírez trade talks with the Padres, with San Diego sweetening its original offer, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks. The Padres are offering major league players for Ramírez, a package that presumably would have to include one of two pitchers: prime setup man Scott Linebrink or ace Jake Peavy. The Sox also have coveted Adrian Gonzalez, a lefthanded-hitting first baseman who put up outstanding numbers in his first full season in 2006: .304, 24 home runs, 38 doubles, and 82 RBIs.

The Dodgers also seem to be involved with names like Kemp, Loney, Broxton and LaRoche. And the article even mentions that Johnny Damon's contract with the Yankees doesn't seem so rich at the moment.

If the Sox got Peavy and A.Gonzalez for Manny...wow.

1) No way the Sox get Peavy AND Gonzalez.
2) It's amazing that most of the Yankees contracts are looking pretty good right now. Matsui, Damon, ARod, Abreu, Posada, etc.

IF that contract amounts accurate, it's a pretty good deal. The trade? No way. And, if the Padres do trade Peavy and Gonzalez for Manny, they'll be the stupidest team in baseball.

It's unrealistic to think that the Padres will ever trade Peavy. His name has to be taken out of the rumor mills.

Linebrink and Gonzalez would be fair, but from what I've read the Padres owner would never be okay with $17mil/year for anyone.

I have to admit, Peavy and Gonzalez would be a nice package for Manny. But I don't see the Padres letting go of Peavy. But lets assume they did, how would that effect the Matsuzaka negotiations? Would the Red Sox still be as motivated to let that $51.1 mm go to Seibu?

Schilling, Papelbon, Beckett, Peavy, Wake?

hmmm...

Five years, $70 million for Nancy Drew playing in Boston? That'll be as good a deal as Renteria's.

How is it that all of a sudden enerybody in Boston is cool with giving JD freakin Drew 14 million a year? As a Yankees fan, I am ecstatic about this possible situation. JD drew hitting behing Ortiz instead of Manny, can anyone say "intentional walk." Then, after JD Drew gets hurt - which is inevitable - it will be Willi Mo or Lowell hitting cleanup. I can't wait. Oh yeah, and to all those who think that the Padres are giving up Peavy - I hear the Twins also need an outfielder and are looking to move Santana and Liriano.

I think the Padres as a trading partner for Manny is a joke. Some baseball "source" probably just threw it out there due to the relationship between teh front offices. The clubs just don't match up.

They are probably cool with 5/70 because they have seen what worse outfielders get. He's a better player than Soriano and far better than Lee, yet is getting less money? All are the same age.

I'll be mad if this deal goes down and the Red Sox don't have to pay more. I mean, the Angels just signed Gary Matthews Jr. for 50 million. No freakin way Drew goes for only 20 million more.

Can anyone remember when JD was suposed to be the new superstar, formerly for my Cardinals, I just cant help thinking that the Red Sox think thats still goin to happen.

"They are probably cool with 5/70 because they have seen what worse outfielders get. He's a better player than Soriano and far better than Lee, yet is getting less money?"

That's what I would have said too. That's why I'm cool with it...though the 5th year doesn't make me too happy. As far as his character and personality go, I'm really not that worried. I mean what happened in LA? He was a dick, supposedly a clubhouse cancer, seemed to hate his time there...but still posted around a .900 OPS with great D and very little help in the lineup. The guy walks a ton, has 30-HR power (especially if he plays in Fenway) and plays a solid to excellent RF.

He's not Manny Ramirez, but I don't think that's what he's supposed to be. He does have trouble against lefties; not as much as Nixon used to have, but it is noticable. I'm actually quite curious to see how this lineup shakes out; many feel that WMP is going to bust out if given a full-time gig, and if Manny goes, LF has to be just about perfect for him. Depending on what Ramirez brings back, Pena + Manny-Bounty could well make up for what we lose without Manny in the lineup...or at least come close. Boston does have to face life without the guy at some point, may as well be when they can get something from his departure (I'm still praying Boston can somehow get 2 or 3 of the Broxton, LaRoche, Loney, Kemp, Billingsley crowd).

I suspect that the Ramirez->San Diego rumors are mostly there to help Epstein squeeze Coletti in LA for a maximal return. Peavy probably isn't going anywhere, given the stupid price of good starting pitching these days, and Adrian Gonzales is good, but the Red Sox don't value first basemen terribly highly. They're looking for more premium pieces for Ramirez.

And Drew isn't terribly worse than Ramirez. Before 2006, I would have said that Drew had a reasonable chance to have better years going forward, as Drew is much younger, but then Ramirezput up a crazy 2006 (his highest EQA since he was 30 in 2002). I wouldn't count on Ramirez doing that again. If Boston effectively trades Ramirez for Drew and some blue chip Dodger prospects, that's kinda scary good.

Manny wont go to san deigo because, San Deiego doesnt have the right players to give out. Los Angeles Dodgers, have one of the best prospects in baseball. If dodgers would give like a Broxton, Kemp, and a LaRoche. Geting a healthy Gange why need a broxton, having outfeiders Either, and Repko, and a Werth, what else do the dodgers need, ill tell you what they need , they need a power hitter like manny, and if they dont get him they would be missing out on alot. It would be Manny, pieire, Either in the out field and Nomar, Kent, Furcal, Bedemit, with qa Russul Martin behind the plate. And the line up would be Pieire, Furcal, Nomar, Manny, Kent, Either, Bedimit, Martin, and the picthers spot. Tell me that does not look like a good lineup.
