Yankees Win the Bidding

The Yankees won the bidding for Kei Igawa, for the paltry sum of $25 million. His stats are here. He looks pretty good. His strikeout, walk and home run numbers in Japan are excellent. He's mature but not old. He's not Matsusaka, but I bet he can be effective in the majors.

The scouting reports on Igawa are...not so good. The numbers don't look bad, though, so I am a bit confused. I've read everything from "he may be a decent No. 3" to "He may be a decent No. 4-5" to "he doesn't have the stuff to make it as a starter."

Word is, Igawa relies on the high "heat" for his K's...his heat just barely touching 92. He's supposed to have some nice breaking stuff, and at least one source claimed he's got a nasty forkball...but supposedly his command over these pitches is suspect.

Don't blast me for this...I'm just regurgitating scouting reports. I know the numbers don't look too bad, which is why, again...I don't know what to think. For what it's worth, David Wright pretty much called him mediocre. :)

Word from a couple scouting reports I've read is that his style and upside is Jerrod Washburn-ish. No better than a 3 but perhaps a decent 4.

Go look at Cliff Corcoran's post at 'Bronx Banter' comparing DMat and Igawa's numbers. Not too much different, FWIW...

His numbers look good to me. Remember, with the Yankees you only need to be decent and a battler to be useful. I think this is a nice signing for the Yankees. Seems relatively cost effective in this absurd market. Its so nice for once, to see the Yankees being the team not overspending. (Yes, they already overspent, but thats not important)

Lauren, most people figure him as a 4, and most estimates were a 10$m posting price. Yanks did not overspend? Think again. If he's good it's money well spent, but they went way over the top on the bid
