Drawing Drew

Sports Illustrated reports the Red Sox are are on the verge of signing J.D. Drew.

Drew became an instant hit on the free-agent market after stirring controversy in Los Angeles by opting out of the $33 million and three years remaining on his Dodgers deal, as his unusual contract allowed. The Rangers, Indians, Orioles, Giants and Padres were among teams who expressed an interest in signing Drew, but several major league executives who were bidding on Drew said Saturday he is ticketed to Boston. A deal could be announced within a week.

It wasn't immediately known how much Boston will pay Drew, but it is presumed by the executives who lost out for Drew to be well in excess of the money he left in Los Angeles. Drew is beloved by statistical aficionados who cite his consistently high on-base and slugging percentages (he has a career .393 on-base percentage and .512 slugging percentage). However, he has come under fire for being injury prone; his 146 games in 2006 was a career high and he's averaged 118 games played over his eight full seasons.

I wonder how intangible aficionados feel about J.D? They probably can't put their finger on it.

That 'intangible aficionado' line is gold; pure, spun gold.

Funny line, but they actually can't stand Drew.

5 years, 120 million.

That would be in line with the Lee and Soriano deals.

Uhh...that's $24MM a year. Way, way, way above Lee and Soriano. You have to be kidding.

5/$75 is more likely. I wouldn't be surprised if it were 5/$70.

Maybe the Sox will drop the Evil Empire talk, as well as Theo's nonsense about how they can't compete payroll wise with the Bronx.

Call me crazy, but how are the Red Sox going to afford Matsuzaka, Manny, Ortiz, the rest of their line-up, AND Drew?

Posted by: Kent at November 26, 2006 08:03 PM

Pretty easily...unless Matsuzaka and Drew both get way, WAY more then I expect them to, Boston will still be around $20MM below the salary cap limit. Before filling their holes at SS, C, etc. at least.

Before the offseason began, I thought Drew was stupid for opting out of $11 Mil year. I didn't believe there was another idiotic team that would sign Drew for more. I hope the Red Sox get their worth from Drew, but I don't think they will. The Red Sox have been overspending on injury prone players - Josh Beckett, JD Drew, and the likes. I believe they still need a SS, not another OF. We'll see how this investment pays off.

J.D. Drew is stupid. He got a good deal w/the Dodgers and now he's trying to get more? Or is he trying to get playoffs? It's not like the red sox are a good team compared to the Dodgers.

He should stick with his old team....they're just as good, my opininon is that they're better.
The BoSox are overrated.

Did they really overspend on Josh Beckett? Anyone who thought Hanley Ramirez was going to be NL ROY, raise your hand. And 10M for Beckett looks pretty decent in this market.

Sheesh, how many $10M+/yr players are the Sox going to buy?

Posted by: Chris at November 27, 2006 10:52 AM

At the right price, Drew is a great addition to this team. He'll be slightly better over the next few years than Trot Nixon was in his best years. But the dollars being speculated are not the right price.

As far as the Beckett contract, 3 and $30 could be a real steal if they get what they think they will out of him instead of 2006 Beckett.

Beckett had an ERA of 5 (if not a bit more). Is that really worth $10M/yr?

Posted by: sabernar at November 27, 2006 01:58 PM

it is worth 10 millon a year if beckett adjusts to the AL, learns how to PITCH and becomes the talented young ace his talent suggests he should be.

and is JD Drew really much better than trot nixon? and your going to pay wayyy more than for trot, another injury-prone RF.

Drew is basically the same player as Nixon, except without diminishing power, with better defense, more speed, etc. He's Nixon times five.

And stop with the "injury prone" nonsense. A recuring knee injury plagued him in his early years. However, in the last three years, his only injury was due to a freak hit by pitch. He's proven he's good for 140+ games a year.
