AAA Giants?

The Giants are striking out on all their attempts to sign free agents, leaving them a shell of a team:

The Giants' committed pursuit of Lee signaled the club's willingness to move on without Barry Bonds. Lee and Bonds are restricted to left field, and the Giants do not have the luxury of a designated hitter.

It was another setback in what has become an excruciating month for the Giants front office. Despite generous offers, they have failed to sign outfielders Juan Pierre and Gary Matthews Jr., and now Lee, who was the best hitter remaining on the free-agent market.

Those losses do not compare to Thursday's sudden passing of Pat Dobson, who was a close friend and chief adviser to Giants general manager Brian Sabean.

Despite Sabean's aggressive efforts, the Giants still have a virtually blank lineup card -- shortstop Omar Vizquel and outfielder Randy Winn are the only projected Opening Day starters -- along with other needs in the rotation and bullpen.

Maybe this will force the Giants to rebuild young. It could take some time, however.

Looks like the Giants are close to signing Aurilia and Roberts, both in their mid-30's: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2006/11/25/SPG19MJSSI1.DTL

"rebuild young"? How can they do that? Don't the Giants have one of the worst farm systems? Didn't they purposely sign players early the past few years in order to purposely lost their first round pick so that they wouldn't have to pay the big signing bonus? I think they are getting what they deserve.

Hey, Pat the Bat Burrell is still available for a bag of corn chips.

At least they won't need Benitez to save many games.

Count me as a Giant's fan that is glad that Sabean lost out on all those guys. Guess he is regretting giving up all those draft picks now.

Also happy that Sabean wasn't able to sign Pierre, Matthews Jr., or Lee. Give me Burrell though.

well i don't think the giants will rebuild young as long as sabean is there.

and i wish they HAD signed lee. now my stros are stuck with him for SIX years

While I wanted the Giants to get young, it shouldn't be at the expense of ridiculous contracts. I'll take Dave Roberts at 5-6 M per year and Aurilia at 3 per year ... and then still have plenty of money to spend next year on a much better crop of free agents.

lisa,

why are you not happy with lee? he is the 2nd best non-pitcher on your team.

tony,

i am not happy because he is signed for SIX years. he is a terrible fielder.

i cannot find even one OF who is at LEAST 50 pounds over fat who played at least 150 games in the OF (no DH, no 1B) every single year for six years from his age 31 to 36 season and maintained even 90% of his age 30 stats.

not one.

heck i can't even find a grossly fat OF who was even playing at ALL in the OF full time no matter what his stats are at age 37.
