Nomar Stays Put

Nomar Garciaparra decided to stay with the Dodgers:

Garciaparra -- who grew up in nearby Whittier and graduated from St. John Bosco High in suburban Bellflower-- had said he was interested in staying with the Dodgers.

"I've loved every minute of it," he said last month.

Garciaparra became all the more attractive to the Dodgers after Drew opted out of the final three years of his contract earlier this month, making him eligible to become a free agent.

Nomar's OBA returned to his career level in 2006 after being below .367 for five seasons. A few more home runs and his slugging percentage would be up there, too. We'll find out later today what kind of money he's receiving.

By the way, nice additions at BaseballReference.com as they've added game logs and splits for players.

Word is 2 years/ 18 million. Which looks pretty good to me - even if he gets injured, the Dodgers aren't saddled with more years.

Huh, same as Frank Thomas, who would you rather have? I'd take Thomas myself.

Would you really take Thomas for a NL team? What position would you have him play?

Thomas? over Nomar? Seriously? If the man does not hit a homerun he is a liability. Him being on bases slows down whoever is behind him. Granted Nomar is injury prone, but so is Thomas. Nomar plays an adequate first base, and will get better with time. Thomas is a DH at best, and a good one for 500k (last year's contract). However, very few DH's are worth $9mil (Ortiz, Hafner) and people questioned Ortiz' contract. With this as a precedent I can't wait to see what Hafner gets.

I really doubt Nomar, at his age, is going to improve as a first baseman. Players in their 30s rarely improve at anything. He's adequate there, and he will be adequate for a few more years, until he has to be a full-time DH.
Better contract than Pierre, for sure. The Dodgers are probably going to regret that one in a few years, I'm guessing.
