At Least with Steroids Athletes Need to Exercise

Via Instapundit, gene doping is on the way:

The ban on so-called "gene doping" or gene therapy by many athletic associations slows the rate of progress for the development of gene therapies that increase musculature. Eventually the athletic associations are going to split over this issue. New athletic associations will form that allow genetic engineering. Those associations and companies will put on competitions between the genetically enhanced that eclipse the competitions between natural humans.

Want big muscles without all the hard work? Genetic engineering of an enzyme is the ticket.

Dartmouth scientists have it working in mice. I suppose it won't be much longer until it's working in humans.

I don't really see gene manipulation to create more fit is a problem. Especially since it's from birth.

Although it reminds me of...A Brave New World I think? Or that might be something else, who knows. I guess Gundam Seed works as well :o

Actually, gene doping isn't from birth. The futurepundit Dartmouth story calls athletes "very willing guinea pigs" in developing therapies that will eventually be used to help old folks and those who actually need the treatment.

re: gene therapy and increasing musculature

this would probably fall under personalized genomics, but essentially, why not? we go to gnc and spend money on general fixes for what ailings and shortcomings our bodies have, why not get the specific genetic fixes we need?

ps wait until the enzyme you need is the one that will keep you from having alzheimers. then you'll wish you had that gene therapy alright, when it means ten more years of sane life.
