The Baseball Writers announce the Manager of the Year awards later today. Here's how SB Nation voted. If Joe Girardi wins, as expected, he'll be the first manager with a losing record to take home the trophy. Winning the division isn't a prerequisite, nor even owning a good record. Tony Pena won with just 83 wins, but like Girardi, his Royals greatly exceeded expectations that season.

I'm also interested in seeing how much support Joe Torre receives. I thought this was one of Joe's better years as a manager, as he actually faced some adversity with all the injuries to the Yankees.

You can't throw that out there without also putting it into perspective. Putting together a lineup and rotation with a Yankees team, even with a LOT of injuries (which they didn't have), is child's play compared to 95% of the MLB. Add to the fact that Torre didn't lift a finger to reduce the bad blood between Jeter and A-Rod (and A-Rod and the rest of NY), and he's an average manager at best.

If "adversity" is arranging 6 All-Stars and former MVPs in the lineup instead of 8, then I guess Joe's your man... Five guys in that linup scored a hundred runs...

Give the Sox or any other team some of that "adversity."

And NoPepperGames nailed it on the A-Rod issue. He blew it during the season, and in my opinion, compounded it in the post-season.
