Can't Anyone Leak Anymore?

First Deadspin admits their source was wrong, and now this:

The federal prosecutor overseeing an investigation of steroids in baseball and the attorney for former pitcher Jason Grimsley questioned a news report indicating five players, including Roger Clemens, had used illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

The prosecutor said the report in the Los Angeles Times contained "significant inaccuracies," including the five names in the report.

If you can't believe someone with an agenda who is leaking redacted documents anonymously, who can you believe? It sounds like the media fell for another fake but accurate story.

re: Clemens, Pettite & Grimsley on the Yankees - Steroids Issue

What the New York Post was reporting in yesterdays issue which I read due to both NY teams being in the playoffs, was that when Clemens joined the Yankees in 1999, it was noticed that both Grimsley and Pettite substantially picked up a lot of velocity on their balls which was missing previously.

The Post story intimates that there is credence to the Clemens rumors based on the notion that Clemens is the one who brought steroids to the Yankees clubhouse and further suggests that the 1999 and 2000 Yankees championships might therefore be tainted by the fact that the pitching staff (not the hitters) were using steroids to achieve an advantage.

Please note that the Post story is based on independent sources which start with the bald accusation of Grimsley that Clemens was using steroids while on the Yankees with him, and then go back to much older allegations about Pettitte, Grimsley and Clemens alleged "velocity" and "power" pickups during the two years Clemens was with the Yanks.

I'll only repeat what the late great Hall of Fame Centerfielder for the Phils Richie Ashburn used to say from the broadcasters booth many a sunday afternoon while covering the Phils. "Pitchers cheat," he'd say. "I don't like pitchers."
