Yankees Lose, Win Home Field Advantage

The Yankees lost 6-5 to the Blue Jays this afternoon as Jeff Karstens stayed in one inning too long. He was fine through six innings, but gave up two hits and his defense allowed a batter to reach on an error. The bullpen came in and allowed Rios to clear the bases with a triple.

But due to the Twins loss, Minnesota can no longer tie the Yankees. The best Detroit can do is a tie with New York, so the Yankees win best record based on a 5-2 record against the Tigers this season.

Derek Jeter went 3 for 3 to raise his batting average to .345. Mauer, who sat, is at .346. Cano went 1 for 4 and sits at .341.

I thought the Yankees secured home field advantage yesterday. The Twins would lose the tie-breaker against the Yanks (they split the season series, but the second tie-breaker is intradivision record).

Tomorrow, if...
Mauer is 0 for 0....he'll be .3462
Mauer is 0 for 4....he'll be .3435
Mauer is 1 for 1....he'll be .3474
Mauer is 1 for 4....he'll be .3454
Mauer is 2 for 4....he'll be .3474

Jeter is 1 for 4......he'll be .3440
Jeter is 1 for 1......he'll be .3457
Jeter is 2 for 4......he'll be .3456
Jeter is 3 for 4......he'll be .3472

So Jeter will most likely need either 2 or 4 hits, to win the batting race, depending on how well Mauer does. Oh, and Mauer's hitting .329 this month, after a couple months of hitting below .300.

If Mauer sits out and rests for the playoffs, Jeter still needs 3 hits, which is unlikely. If Mauer gets 1 AB and it's a hit, and then it removed from the game (which I could see a manager doing in order to help his player win a batting title), he'll force Jeter into needing 4 hits.

I think tomorrow will probably go a long ways in many voters minds, about whether Jeter is an MVP or not.

"I think tomorrow will probably go a long ways in many voters minds, about whether Jeter is an MVP or not."

What the...?!?!?! So you're saying that people will think Jeter is the MVP if he gets a bunch of hits in the 162nd game of the season? What about the first 161 games? Hasn't he proven himself yet? No matter what he does tomorrow, he is still the AL MVP.

It will be truly reprehensible if today's performance by Jeter has any significant impact on writers' choice for MVP. There couldn't be a less meaningful game that this one. (Bernie Williams is going to be the manager; Mussina the pitching coach.)

But in fact, the weather is threatening in NY, so there may be no game at all.
