Close in the West
The two games in progress to help decide the NL playoff picture are close contests. The Padres just scored a run in the top of the seventh to cut the Diamondbacks' lead in half. Arizona leads 2-1 on the strength of an Eric Byrnes home run in the third inning.
Meanwhile, Noah Lowry has the Dodgers under control. He's allowed just one hit, a single to Kenny Lofton as the Giants lead 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth. The Padres and Dodgers losing would greatly help the three-way West/Wild Card tie scenario.
Update: Carlos Quentin hits his second double of the game, this time driving in Drew to extend the Arizona lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
Update: Randy Winn drives a ball over Kenny Lofton's head to score Alfonzo from second. The Giants lead 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
Update: Hillenbrand singles in Winn to make the score 3-0 and bring Bonds to the plate.
Update: Barry strikes out swinging to end the inning. The Dodgers need three runs over 12 outs.
Update: J.D. Drew follows a Kent single with a two run shot that goes over the seats but short of McCovey Cove. It's back to a one-run game, 3-2 Giants.
Update: Velverde retires the Padres in order in the 9th as Arizona takes a 3-1 victory. No matter what the outcome of the Dodgers/Giants game, the three way tie lives another day. Six teams are still in the race for three playoff spots.
