Shoddy Fielding
The Oakland Athletics take a 4-0 lead on a couple of bad fielding plays. Sabathia threw a comebacker into centerfield, leaving men on first and second with none out instead of getting a double play. Later in the inning, Peralta let a ball he could field get by him for a base hit. The error leads to three of the runs being unearned, but better fielding would have resulted in no score in the inning.

I'm always amused to see pitchers escape earned runs on their own errors. Is there any way to correct for the imperfect justice of that situation - that "earned runs" given up are charged to a pitcher, but runs given up as a result of his own *errors*, not even just bad pitches or good pitches hit well or good pitches hit badly where fielders can't make a play on them, are "unearned" and thus don't go into his ERA?
Or maybe it's just not what ERA is supposed to describe. I could live with that, too.
