The Original Radar Gun

Tom Lederer recalls the first time radar was used to time a pitcher in a game.

Correction: It was Tom, not Rich Lederer.

Wow, back then people were interested in the 100 mph barrier, and not the 150 pitch barrier. These days, it probably would be reversed. That is, if anyone every approached 150 pitches in a game anymore.

Livan Hernandez, Aaron Harang and Curt Schilling have each approached the 150 pitch mark this year. Each has one game this year in which they've thrown 133 pitches or more.

150 is only a big deal because pitchers are so coddled now. Most good pitchers should be allowed to pitch to 120 or more semi-regularly--especially if the game is close--rather than giving the ball to a middle reliever.
