Liriano Returns

The chances of the Twins making the playoffs just got better:

The Minnesota Twins on Monday activated rookie phenom Francisco Liriano from the 15-day disabled list.

Liriano, who has drawn comparisons to 2004 Cy Young Award winner and teammate Johan Santana, has taken the American League by storm this season, going 12-3 with a 2.19 ERA. However, he has been on the disabled list since Aug. 8 with a strained ligament in his left elbow.

The 22-year-old left-hander is expected to start Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics.

With Silva returning to form, I'm guessing Baker is out of the rotation. If Liriano pitches as he did before the injury, the Twins become that much tougher an opponent in post season as well.

We'll see...

Liriano's 15 starts:

5 vs. NL...No games allowing 3 ERs or more.

5 vs low-OPS AL (2 SEA, LAA, BAL, TAM)...1 game allowing 3 ERs or more... took the loss.

5 vs. high-OPS AL (2 CLE, 2 DET, TEX)...2 games
allowing 3 ERs or more... took 2 losses.

Remaining starts (if he stays healthy): OAK, BOS, BAL, CHA...2 low-OPS, 2 high-OPS.

Like I said, we'll see...

Those two losses against high OPS teams:
One was the first game back after the all-star break, flying from Texas to the DR to Pitt to Minnesota in four days. (vs cleveland)

The other was his one attempt at starting after skipping a start (in Detroit). He went on the DL that night.

Both Scott Baker and Matt Garza are being dropped for the time being. Matt Guerrier is taking Baker's spot tonight and depending on how he does, it could be permanent. Liriano is replacing Garza who will play backup Wednesday because of Liriano's pitch count restriction.
