Lack of Tranparency

It seems Gary Majewski was damaged goods.

The Reds didn't know that the right-hander had a cortisone injection in his shoulder before the All-Star break. Majewski was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday after telling the team that his shoulder has bothered him since spring training.

A medical test found no serious injury. There's no telling how long he will be sidelined with what was diagnosed as a tired shoulder.

"I'm still trying to figure out what's what here," Krivsky said. "I'm glad we have Gary Majewski, and I'm glad he's not hurt seriously. I'm disappointed he's not active for us right now."

Obviously, this doesn't reflect well on Jim Bowden.

Waitasec. Everybody who's been paying attention in Nationals land has read copy about how Majewski was overworked last year, how he's being overworked this year, how the WBC tired him out during the preseason, etc. If Krivsky and his team didn't do the basic research that such a major trade would require to turn these rumors up and explore them, then it reflects badly upon him, not Jim Bowden.

As the article says, there is no serious injury. It's not as if Bowden was concealing something season-threatening, like the torn labrum that Brian Lawrence forgot to tell anyone about (before the Nationals dealt the similarly gimpy Vinny Castilla to the Padres for him). I'm no fan of Bowden, but I think the effort to shift the onus to him is lazy typecasting. Krivsky dropped the ball, especially since what's at issue here - Majewski's exhausted arm - is not a secret.

Excellent comment, Jeff. Isn't a trade cast in the light Jeff finds objectionable often followed up by an additional player 'tossed in' to make up for the perceived slight? Is there any indication this might occur in this instance?

Also: is cortisone often used to treat 'tired arm'? Does it really do anything to combat this rather broad condition? Is it possible the cortisone shot implies a more serious condition?

agreed, jeff. i really dont like bowden, but as a met fan i am happy he is running a team in my devision. This was by no means his fault. This was not a secret and only makes this trade worse for cincy. And while i am on the subject of this stupid trade, I do not understand how Ryan Wagner has ZERO career saves right now. They tried the old "hittable closer" with Danny Graves for two seasons never letting Ryan Wagner get a chane at a save while showing brilliance. I hope Washington uses him right.

The amount of pitching Majewski had done before the trade is obviously public knowledge.

The question is whether or not Washington revealed that he'd had a cortisone shot days before the trade.
