Wilson a Yankee

The Yankees dump Shawn Chacon on the Pirates for Craig Wilson, according to ESPNnews. Once again, I don't understand what Pittsburgh is doing here. Wilson has some value. And although I had hope for Chacon, he's at best inconsistent. What are the Pirates gaining from these trades?

Man, that's nice (from a Yankee perspective.)

Craig Wilson's not that different from Xavier Nady. I think they basically sent Wilson, Oliver Perez and Roberto Hernandez away to get back Nady and Chacon.

I don't think there's much to be gained there.

True. But then why make trades at all. If Nady ~= Wilson and Perez ~= Chacon, then the Pirates are losing a relief pitcher in the deal. The Pirates are a mess.

Nady is overrated. All these trades have done is show why they haven't had a winning season in forever.

McClatchey should trade himself for Mark Cuban right about now

Where will the Yankees play Wilson though?

Posted by: Will at July 31, 2006 04:22 PM

Wilson will back up at 1B, Giambi will DH more.

Nady's not totally comparable to Wilson - Wilson can catch, and that's a huge asset.

I want to see the roster moves the Yanks make to accommodate the new players - they have to dump 2 position players, no?

Wilson will play... nowhere. He's on the bench. I suspect they may drop Fasano and let Wilson be the backup C.

Yeah, there's certain teams that always look like chumps after the trading deadline.

Wilson can play man roels for the Yankees. He can play 1B when Giambi is Dh-ing, effectively replacing Andy Phillips and his sub-.700 OPS. He can also play LF, at least as a platoon for Cabrera against lefties. Wilson has good platoon splits. Even as a bench player, this is a good trade. The fact that he is taking away some pretty feeble at bats every day from Cabrera, Bernie, and Phillips makes it a great one.

He's a super-sub. Kind of like Neifi, but he contributes.

Wilson will be RF/1B, replacing Bernie in the OF and Phillips at 1B.

The Pirates (my fave team) made horrible deals yesterday. In the best one, they got back a 24-year old middle reliever pitching in AA. That's not good.
