Grand Anniversary

My baseball fact calendar tells me it's the fortieth anniversary of pitcher Tony Cloninger hitting two grand slams against the Giants. It was the first time a National League player hit two grand slams in one game. Here's the boxscore. Notice both came with two outs. Note, too that the first baseman and leadoff hitter that day for the Braves was current manager Felipe Alou. Earlier in the day, his wife gave birth to a son name Moises. Lots of fireworks for Felipe that day!

Correction: Felipe played for the Braves, not the Giants that day.

One of my childhood memories -- a sunny day on the beach at Bangs Lake, listening to the White Sox game, and hearing the announcer report that Cloninger had hit a grand slam -- no, TWO grand slams.

I was working on some no-hit trivia today (using the Retrosheet database) and discovered that Cloninger is one of nine pitchers to make a no-hit bid (5 or more innings) in his final major league start.

Looking at the box score, it would appear that Felipe Alou lead off for the Braves, It was his brother Jesus who led off for the Giants.

Also note the Brave's catcher, one Joe Torre!
