Too Pessimistic?

For the second time in recent days, I see this at FishStripes:

We aren't going to win the World Series this year.

However, looking at the standings, the Marlins are just six games out of the wild card. Their penultimate series of the season is against the Reds, sandwiched between two series with the Phillies. The odds are they won't win the World Series, but it would be mighty impressive if they made the playoffs. If nothing else, it shows you can replace a number of veterans with a number of young, cheap players and do pretty well.

While everyone's been looking at the Marlins as sellers at the trading deadline, might an extended winning streak make them buyers? Who has more prospects to trade than the Marlins? They have offensive weaknesses in center and right field. Why not trade for an experienced, good outfielder? Or a third baseman so you can send Cabrera back to right? Would the Cubs move Aramis Ramirez to rebuild?

Just about everybody is in the NL wild card race, so the Fish can join the fun. About the only teams hopelessly out of contention right now are the Pirates and Cubs. I can't see Chicago unloading Ramirez, but Pittsburgh would probably love to peddle Burnitz. He got off to a horrendous start, but he's been getting a few extra-base hits in June and now has his slugging average up to .444. That's a better SLG than any Marlins outfielder except Willingham, so the Fish might want to take a look, especially if Burnitz' improvement continues.

I assume by right you actually mean left

I think Marlins fans are undervaluing their team. They looked good against Baltimore last night. Of course...who doesn't look good against us lately....besides the Mets.

I like the Marlins lineup and it is only gonna get better. I'd stand pat and let the chips fall where they may. These young guys are gonna be pretty damn good. What they need is a little more pitching and they would be tough. Next year watch out for this team.

I see reggie sanders as being a great fit for that team.

re: aramis ramirez

even though david bell is good defensively at 3d, they really could use the bat at 3rd that aramis ramirez represents. He would earn more offensive win shares playing in Citizens Bank Park a friendly hitters park as well. Plus he is younger than Bell.

re: David Bell & Aramis Ramirez

part two of that is that they could then trade David Bell to the Marlins for prospects if the Marlins wanted to make a run.
