On and On
Dunstin Morse from the Minnesota Twins writes:
After tonight's game, Joe Mauer has reached base four times in five straight games... we believe that this is a Major League record... the previous record was four... set five times:
- Billy Hamilton, Philadelphia (NL), July 21-25,1893.
- Billy Hamilton, Philadelphia (NL), July 20-23 (2), 1894.
- Milt Stock, Brooklyn (NL), June 30-July 3,1925.
- Babe Ruth, New York (AL), June 12-15, 1930.
- Barry Bonds, San Francisco (NL), October 2-5, 2001.
They're double checking this. It's a very impressive feat for Mauer. Joe was 2 for 3 tonight with 2 walks. He has 14 hits, 6 walks and no hit by pitch during the streak and is hitting .700 over the last five games.
Update: Dustin writes that with further research, Mauer tied a record. Two other hitters reached four time in five straight games:
-
Brian Downing, TEX AL, 4/13-4/19/1991
- Mike Piazza, LA NL, 8/23/1997-8/27/1997
Interesting that all three were catchers at one time in their careers, although Downing was a DH by the time he set the mark.
I've been trying to research this a bit myself, but it takes a long time to run. Brett Butler had a four game streak in 1995.

And yet he's not even in the top 5 of all-star voting.
Where did he come from? I don't remember an average player ever jumping so high and sudden into the upper echelon of greatness, even if it's just for a week or so. This isn't even a guy that often has the word "potential" in the same sentence.

Are you serious? Just because he doesn't play on one of the coasts doesn't mean he can't have potential. See Aaron Gleeman or Baseball Prospectus 2005.
Also, Pregame Analysis might want to note that Joe Mauer was taken number 1 overall in the 2001 draft. I would think it safe to assume that all players taken first overall in the major league draft are often mentioned with the word "potential." Whether they pan out is another story, but Joe Mauer's been a strong prospect from day one.
Where did he come from? Like MH said, he was the No. 1 pick. And he was a legend in high school - in baseball and football (top-rated QB of 2001 class). Was also a great basketball player on the side. Had high averages throughout his minor league days. And is 23. Not like he's doing this as a 30 year old who didn't do anything for seven years.
Pregame Anaysis must have been living under a rock the past three years if he's asking "where did he come from" with regards to Joe Mauer. I remember that every pre-season mag in 2004 had Joe Mauer listed as the top prospect in baseball. He was the man who had been drafted before Mark Prior, who had been the best pitcher in baseball in 2003. Every article said he was the best "natural hitter" to come up in some time. I sincerely doubt he had ever been an "average player" in his entire lifetime.
On another note, I find it almost offensive that he isn't even in the top five in the all-star voting.
if he's not from ny or boston how could he be any good?????
i mean why would anyone vote for anyone besides posada or varitek???!!!
I didn't mean Mauer has no potential, I just meant I never hear anyone saying this guy has potential. Usually, players who become great, start their careers with people talking about how much potential they have. I haven't heard that, and I've lived the past 3 years near Rochester, NY (where the Twins AAA team is). So it's surprising to me. I know he's been regarded as a good player who was good in his past, but I just haven't heard anyone talking about his potential all the time.
I don't know where I've been, to miss all the talk.
