Clemens Evening Done

Roger Clemens didn't get out of the third inning, allowing one run on a homer in the first. He did strike out six, however, a good sign.

He was scheduled to throw 60 pitches and threw a few more; 65 or 67 or something. He was clearly tired. He was wild high to start, and had great trouble with one of his pitches; the cutter I think but it was so high and to the right that it wasn't clear what it was supposed to be. He missed whatever it was that way maybe a dozen times, and the catcher kept pointing to his shoulder, as in "You're leading with...".

The ump had trouble with the curve, not being able to follow it in. The fastball was his out pitch once he got it down, not becaase it was overpowering-- 92 or so it looked-- but because he had command and moved it around. I couldn't see that the splitter dived at all; looked to me like it was getting by as a change against this level hitter, and high minors guys might abuse it. But this is Clemens we're talking about and I imagine by the time he gets to AA he'll have worked that out.

He did a very nice set of "thank yous" to both teams, the umps and the fans; the kind of thing that gives "big league" its meaning...
