Two Inning Save

Fernando Rodney comes on in the eighth to get the Athletics 1-2-3, but runs into trouble in the ninth. A single and two walks load the bases with one out, but Kendall grounds into a force at home and Melhuse strikesout to end the game and give Rodney his fourth save. The Tigers win 4-3.

Correction: Rodney go the win, not the save. Still, it's good to see Leyland usings his closer in a non-save situation like that.

I think Rodney got the win, not the save -- Det. scored three in the top of the ninth to go ahead after Rodney had already pitched the eighth.

Out of curiosity, why didn't Street close today?

Nevermind...just a day off...I knew he didn't throw yesterday but didn't notice the 3 straight from Friday through Sunday. Also, Rodney did get the win.

A nice win for the Tigers! Good to see them rebounding a little after losing 7 of 9.

Joltin Joe is 100% right.

Rodney is better than Jones and s/b the closer. That will happen in a few weeks.

Down a run, one out in the ninth, bases loaded... and the A's let Kendall hit!?!? What are the chances that his .250 SLG hits a ball deep enough to bring the runner home from third?

Reports on BBTN were that Street is a little banged up. I think they had him at day-to-day.

The A's have a lot of holes and biggest is Ken Macha. Letting Kendall bat was foolish. He is another former National League hitting star who is a bust in the American League. He can't hit or throw out base stealers. Yet he is the highest paid A at $11 million. With a .029 hitting 1st baseman, a left fielder who has no RBIs, a 2nd baseman who had a career year last year and is back to normal this year, the As are in trouble. Any bets that Macha will be gone in a month?
