The Wisdom of the Crowds

Or, in this case, lack of crowds. In an article about poor attendance at Diamondback games, a fan sums up the team very well:

Some fans at Wednesday night's game said they thought the drop-off could be attributed to wins and losses.

"They don't have a very good team," said Matt Wright, 26, of Phoenix, who was attending his first regular-season game. "They need to spend some money. They've got too many young guys and too many old guys, and they need pitching bad."

They need more players in their prime. The young ones will get there soon, and the old ones will leave at the same time. That should leave the Diamondbacks in pretty good shape.

Yeah, the current team looks a little mediocre with only 4 stand-out players (Tracy, Webb, Jackson, Valverde). But, that could change quickly with the number of top prospects they have at the upper levels of the minors (Drew, Quentin, C. Young, Nippert). Looks like they're poised for an excellent 2007 season.

Considering the division, the D-Backs aren't that bad, though it seems the pitching (other than Webb) is even worse than I thought they'd be. They've certainly got a bright future with the young talent they have in the farm, but I can see why fans would be frustrated with a couple of years of bad play.

It's amazing how empty the park has been during the 3 regular season games I have been to. It was more crowded at the Yankees game before the season started.

I believe the D-Backs have had their two-lowest attended games in history during this season, and considering it's still April that doesn't give much hope for the rest of the year. Of course, when I got to the park and saw Ortiz was pitching, I almost turned around and left myself.

Like someone else said, this is juts a minor blip. The D-Backs are loaded with hitters in AAA and once they're free of Green's and Gonzalez' contracts they can shell out for some good pitching and contend in 2007.
