Jackie Robinson Field

Via MetsBlog.com Dr. Blogstein suggests that the Mets name their new ballpark Jackie Robinson Field. The problem is the Mets want to sell a corporate sponsorship:

Various reports quote the price for naming rights of the new Mets home to be in the ballpark (pun intended) of $10M per season. Let's figure we get two-million Mets fans to agree to chip in $1 each/year. Then, hopefully with the publicity and buzz that our mission creates, we could get some wealthy benefactors to donate the rest.

Or, the Mets could just name the park after the legend. New York is one of the few baseball cities where the stadium naming rights won't make a huge difference to the bottom line. Or maybe a sponsor can pay the money and call it JRF. I think it's a great name for the park, and I encourage fans to push this idea.

re: naming the mets new stadium jackie robinson field

While they're at it, the Mets might try relocating to Brooklyn, since in the interval between 1962 and 2006, Queens, which was a nice place in 1962, has turned into a sh-thole in 2006, while Brooklyn, which had been a mess in 1962, is now a rich, white, upper class suburb full of yuppies raising their kids in brownstones. Brooklyn is like bigger and more populous and richer than Boston.

They could rename the team the Brooklyn Robins or the Brooklyn Trolley-Darters to avoid the Dodger name. I like robins, personally. But mets would be ok, so long as they became the Brooklyn-NY Mets.

Now that would be a true tribute to Jackie Robins and the team and the town he gave everything on the field for.

arthur - You haven't been to Brooklyn or Queens much lately, have you?

Move to Brooklyn? Put down the crackpipe, Arthur. The team is not moving, and you know nothing about the merits of New York's various counties. Jackie's number has been retired, and he has a major road named after him. That is deserved and enough.

Why not Jackie Robinson Field at Citibank Ballpark? Compromise anyone?
