Something's Juiced

Travis Lee and Ty Wigginton each hit his fourth home run of the year tonight. If I may quote the Chewbacca Defense, "that does not make sense!"

The Devil Rays lead the Orioles 4-1 in the seventh.

"What is a ten-foot tall Wookie doing living on a planet with a bunch of three-foot tall Ewoks?"

I've said it once and I'll say it again...the balls are juiced this year.

That way, Selig can compare the "steroid era" with the "post-steroid era" and try to claim that "Look, there was no effect from steroids. The numbers are the same!"

Maybe.

2006: 311 HR, 260 G

2005: 5017 HR, 4862 G (Cincy and Houston played 163 games)

2005: 1.032 HR/G
2006: 1.196 HR/G

2006 projected HR: 5813

But small sample size and all that jazz. I don't know how much you can take from it.

(So why did you post it?)

I just saw the potential to prove someone wrong and I jumped on it! :)

Always thought steroids were mostly hot air vented by mediots. Sure, they had an effect on certain players - Bonds wouldn't have 700 homers now without them. But I think their overall effect on the game was much slighter than that plain old thing, the strike zone.

Call the plate 17 inches across, like it is in the rulebook, and you'll see an offensive explosion that would dwarf anything from chemicals. This year the plate is getting called closer to the rules, at least to my subjective view. Fewer "Glavine strikes" three-four-six inches off the outside corner. The result is better pitches to hit and more offense.

Simple, no?
