Weaver Stays in Los Angeles!

At least if you believe Arte Moreno's name for the Angels. LAnaheim signed the Jeff Weaver to a one year contract for $8.4 million. The Angels are trying to corner the market on Weavers:

His younger brother, Jered, a former pitching star for Long Beach State, is a prospect in the Angels' organization.

I'm not impressed. Weaver can give a team innings, but that's about it. He's never posted more than 14 win shares in a season. He consumes innings, which is fine on a deep staff, but he's a 3rd or 4th starter at best. I guess even that level of pitching commands a lot of money today.

It seems like the going rate for an average pitcher, an innings eating starter, is around 8-9 million a year, sadly enough - Washburn got a little more than that, and Burnett got a lot more than that. If you think baseball salaries are out of line, you should check out the NBA sometime, and take note of, for example, how much the Bulls are paying Tim Thomas to not play.

Wait wait. Weaver can give up home runs too. He's very good at that.

Before the Weaver signing, the Angels planned to use Hector Carrasco as their fifth starter, a 37-year-old relief pitcher who had started, I think, a total of 5 games in his career. Weaver is definitely an up-grade over Carrasco, who can now return to the pen, strengthening an already impressive relief corps.

It's odd - you look at Weaver's numbers, and even discounting a bit that he pitched in a good pitchers park last season, it seems baffling, on the surface, that it took this long to sign him. A little worryisome, to say the least. Most things I've read from baseball writers and insiders is that he's a bit of a head case and, most importantly, doesn't get along too well with other players and front offices.( Having Boras as his agent doesn't help that.) He'll be an average pitcher at best for Anaheim. Next year he'll be somewhere else again.

Colon, Lackey, Escobar, Santana, Weaver. Weaver seems like he'd be a solid 4th/5th starter for the Angels. One important note is the improved defense behind Weaver in LAA (vs LAD), which should help with his groundball tendencies.
