Better On Top

I wonder if the Oakland Athletics considered this when closing the upper deck of the Coliseum:

Paul Miller, 51, of Berkeley, is a season-ticket holder with seats in the lower level, section 123.

"Bad idea," he said. "Sometimes my kids use the tickets. But they don't sit in my seats. They go to the upper deck. My son says he can see the game better up there."

Maybe they should close the back rows of all the decks instead. Of course, it's also possible they'll use the upper deck tarps as a money maker:

Behind the plate, the tarps will have this message, in gold lettering: HOME OF THE OAKLAND ATHLETICS. The years of the four Oakland World Series titles will be listed above the right-field corner, and the five championship years of the old Philadelphia A's will be seen above the left-field corner.

The four retired player numbers -- Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, Reggie Jackson and Dennis Eckersley -- also will be shown.

Crowley said it's possible the tarps will carry advertising. He hopes fans will relish in the new environment once they experience it. For now, fans are skeptical.

My bet is that advertising is more than a possibility.

Advertising in those spots is almost a given. The Jacksonville Jaguars tarped over thousands of seats in Alltel Stadium this season. On some, a graphic of a real jaguar head with a teal tongue was printed. Corporate sponsors - printed directly onto the tarp - were on the rest. If the Jaguars could sell it, I can't see the A's forgoing the revenue. (Yes, I realize it's not quite the same, but it's close.)

Closing the 3rd at the Coliseum is a great move for the A's. Season ticket AND single game sales are markedly up over last year.

Closing the back rows of each deck doesn't solve the problem for the A's as well as just closing one full deck. By closing one deck, they don't have to staff it with security, concessions, etc. There have to be some cost savings in that.

re: the Philadelphia Athletics

Advertising the Philadelphia A's pennants in Oakland from 1905, 1910, 1911, 1912, 1913, 1914, 1929, 1930, 1931, and world series wins in 1930, 29, 13, 12, 111, etc., seems a bit detached from California.

How about we trade them a draft choice and get back the pre-55 rights to display all pennants and paraphernalia from the A's back to the Phillies? After all, they only have 2 pennants (1915 and 1950) and no world series wins. The As in Oakland have six pennants, 4 world series wins and a lot of division titles on top of that. they don't need all those Philly Connie Mack wins to load up with.
