Rhodes Show

According to Jayson Stark's sources, Arthur Rhodes is taking a physical in Philadelphia, raising the likelihood of a Crisp for Marte deal between the Indians and the Red Sox. As always, stay tuned. It could just be the Indians are dumping Rhodes.

He was traded to Philly for Michaels, hence the physical.

Globe is reporting done deal:
Marte/Mota/Shoppach/$/ptbnl for Crisp, Riske,Bard

Bad trade for the Sox.

Then again if I look at it as Renteria for Crisp (plus the other pieces), I am happy.

Just say no to Alex Gonzalez!

I really hope Gillick knows what he's doing, because this smacks of an Ed Wade Special, young talent for aging middle reliever. I know the Phils want to put Madson in the rotation, but trusting the back of the bullpen to two guys over 36 scares me.

Matt, it scares me too. But I am fairly optimistic about some of the spare parts Gillick has used elsewhere in the bullpen, particularly Chris Booker (90-some K's in 60-some IP's in AAA last year). Hopefully if Rhodes falters, one of them can step up (and hopefully Manuel will be smart enough to recognize Rhodes is out of gas and use one of the others).

re: Arthur Rhodes & Ryan Madsen

I neglected to touch on the issue of putting Ryan Madsen in the rotation.

This is a very bad idea. Ryan Madsen has been a very effective set up man for the last two years pitching in the 6th, 7th & 8th innings, often going two innings.

He reminds me a lot of Ron Reed, the big tall guy who pitched a lot of middle inning relief for the Braves and Phills in the 60s and 70s, a middling starter who became a good reliever with the Phils winning 70s teams.

I don't think Madsen will be a great starter. He's not a strikeout pitcher and he would need to add another pitch to his repetoire.

Starting pitchers need to strikeout batters or have excellent control.

Madsen also may ruin his arm by trying to go too many innings all at once, especially in the cold wet spring of early April and May in Philadelphia.

This is a mistake. Just acquire a starter or bring one up. Madsen, Rhodes and Gordon are the bullpen. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Those three guys can eat up 3-4 innings a night.
