Benson to Baltimore
FoxSports.com is reporting that Kris Benson is now an Oriole:
The Mets have traded right-hander Kris Benson to the Orioles for reliever Jorge Julio and a prospect, FOXSports.com has learned.
The trade with the Orioles will give Heilman a chance to become the Mets' No. 5 starter.
Benson will join a rotation that includes left-hander Erik Bedard, and right-handers Daniel Cabrera and Rodrigo Lopez.
Julio gives up a lot of home runs, but Shea might help that. Benson's strikeouts disappeared over time, so I'm not optimistic about his future value. I'm not really sure this trade helps either club.
Update: John Maine was included in the deal, going from the Orioles to the Mets.

please omar, let this only be part one of the deal (bring us zito).
my guess on the jeff weaver commentary a few days ago makes a whole lot more sense right now.
The O's had Maine line up as a fifth starter. I really don't think he could have handled the job. He's looked awful in the limited of starts with the big club. Benson, on the hand, can hopefully at least be serviceable.
worst contract in baseball, period
I'm thinking Leo Mazzone wanted Benson.... thinks Benson's a pitcher he can work with. That's intrigues me.
worse than adrian beltre? jaret wright? kevin brown (recently expired)?
Worse than Mike Mussina ($19 million for '06)?
from metsblog.com -- rumors are that the mets are gonna take lastings milldge (their top prospect), maine, and victor diaz, and ship them to the a's for zito. fits with the rumors that they are looking at jeff davanon (would fill diaz's spot).
either that or minaya was bored, and decided that he needed to make some headlines. which is also possible IMO
I like this trade. The Met's are opening room for Barry Zito, or at worst, Aaron Heilman, while boosting up their bullpen depth. Julio will make a nice setup man for Billy Wagner.
just like the Mike Camr. trade..pure salary dump.
i wonder if this means they have confidence in the new aquisitions of Alay Soler (cuba) and Yusaku Iriki (japan) who are both starting pitchers. Hopefully it plays out for zito, but i think the price for zito includes lastings milledge, at least until the trading deadline when zito's price will drop (but the a's should be in the hunt so i dont think that will happen). im not big on weaver at all, but he is a huge innings eater, which i didnt think was a big deal until i saw this stat:
the white sox were the only team last year with 4 starting pitchers to each go over 200 innings.
has to be worth something right?
So, what does this mean for Anna Benson?
Why Baltimore would want to take on Benson's salary and 9 wins is beyond me.
