Marlins Move?

Fishstripes heard a rumor about the City of Hialeah coming up with the money to build a stadium for the Marlins. I find nothing on Google News. Did anyone else hear this?

When my sister was born, my mother wanted to give her a name that didn't lend itself to a silly nickname. She named her Leah. When she brought her home from the hospital, she put her in a cradle in the living room. My two cousins and I gathered around the cradle, waved and chanted, "Hiya Leah, Hiya Leah, Hiya Leah!" One of my parent's best friends, who likes to play the ponies says, "Hiya Leah, how are things at the race track?" whenever he sees her. Needless to say my mother failed in her quest.

Good for them. Go for it. (I'm not a Marlins fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't want to see them disappear either.) No to contraction! No to different MLB cities! Yes to The Beautiful Game. :)

There's no name that kids can't turn into a silly nickname.

In the first word I've seen of this, it's in the Miami Herald this morning:

"The Hialeah Marlins? The Florida Marlins and Hialeah mayor Julio Robaina will meet next week to discuss the possibility of building a baseball stadium in the city, Robaina confirmed Wednesday night. Robaina said Marlins representatives arranged the meeting. He mentioned three possible sites for a ballpark: Hialeah Park racetrack; an area west of Interstate 75 -- both privately owned; and Amelia Earhart Park, which is Miami-Dade property."

David, I'm a sucker for cute stories like that. Thanks.

It's better than the rumor of the Devil Ray's new nickname: Tarpons.

The Tarpons were a team name in Tampa for a long time, so it makes sense.

I am glad no one has ever made a silly nickname for me.

I can certainly think of a silly nickname for "Tarpons."
