The Ray Lankford Wing

Beyond the Boxscore uses Jay Jaffe's JAWS system to create a Ray Lankford Wing of the Hall of Fame. These are players who had fine careers but just haven't qualified for the Hall of Fame. Nice to see Mickey Tettleton listed among the catchers.

I like it! I've always needed a place to commemorate those guys. Great guys to have on your team. Ballplayers worth remembering. Lots of magic moments. Just not Hall-worthy.

I think the Don Mattingly wing would be a better name, but hey.

Jeremy --Well I got the idea after reading something on Ray Lankford, so that name stuck.

Adam -- Glad you like it

Thanks for the link David.

you should name it the "Gil Hodges wing of the Great but not in".....what a joke he isn't in the hall.....so before you go handing out naming rights to this "wing"...name it after someone who's gonna make em think.....lankford in Hall conversation?....nah.

Its not a Hall for Cooperstown snubs though. Its a Hall for players of Lankford's quality and better, the upper middle class talent range that is forgotten by history.

It's amazing how quickly everyone forgot about a-belle.

Personally, I think Belle is a Hall of Famer, especially if Kirby Puckett is a Hall of Famer. I don't like to make special cases for players who need a little extra boost (read: those who bring down the average value of a HoF'er) but Belle was basically screwed out of definitive Cooperstown caliber numbers by his hip problems. If Puckett can get in (with worse numbers) then Belle should be let in as well. But thats just me.

Let me follow that up by saying I don't think the comparison of "well Player X is in so Player Y should be too" is a good way of going about it, especially with the odd VC selections, but Belle, like Puckett, seems to be a special case.

aside from his attitude, there isn't very good arguement, based on his numbers, to keep him out of the Hall. But did he do it long enough? What people haven't mentioned about Mattingly vs. Kirby P. is that Kirby left the game while he was still very productive when his career ended. Mattingly didn't have a "good" season for quite a few seasons before he retired. The tail off is probably being held against him.....What about Gil Hodges?...what about Tony Oliva?...shouldn't they be in the Hall?....and lastly folks..how about a response on who "we" should take out of the Hall of Fame?.....sorry, one more....hey Marc, how about Al Oliver, Rusty Staub, Bill Madlock and Cecil Cooper in the Hall of Lankford?
