Trading for a Blue Box

The Dodgers and Devil Rays swapped a pair of pitchers yesterday. The trade to me looks like Danys Baez for Chuck Tiffany. Baez gives the Dodgers a good closer until Gagne returns. Tiffany is about to turn 21, and he's blowing people away in the minor leagues, averaging over 10 strikeouts per 9 innings. He does have a problem keeping the ball in the park, however. The other two pitchers involved in the trade are less impressive, with Lance Cater going to the Dodgers and Edwin Jackson joining the Devil Rays. I'm guessing this part of the deal was a salary dump by Tampa Bay.

The Dodgers strengthen their bullpen, and the Devil Rays get a hot prospect. On the Tampa side, this trade will be measured in years.

I see the Dodgers have finally given up on Jackson.

Yeah, I don't think Jackson was going to make it as a major league pitcher. Who knows, though? In St. Petersburg, he's much more likely to get major league playing time. At the very least, by the end of this season we should know for sure if he's ready for prime time.

This is the first trade Colletti's done that's involved serious prospects. Tiffany looks hot, but Baez has been undervalued laboring away for Tampa Bay. I feel a lot better about the Dodger bullpen now than when the plan was Gagne and a bunch of no-namers. I still think we could get some more bullpen help by putting Olmedo Saenz up for auction.

Carter's shown some promise, too. He's not exactly chopped liver.

Carter kind of sucks, actually - he's 31 and his k/bb ratios are terrible, as well as his h/ip rates and era, home runs allowed...etc...pitching in dodger stadium might help a bit, but a river doesn't reverse course. Not sure why the dodgers picked up Baez...he will either be the second option, or pissed off about being Gagne's set-up guy. Interesting to see how he will adapt to the role. It seems like the Dodgers are becoming the Yanks or Bosox of the West - money is no object.

Well, remember when they were wasting money on guys like Darren Dreifort, Carlos Perez, and Todd Hundley? I hope they can finally get their money's worth out of these new players.

I was at Universal Citywalk yesterday and saw that they have a new Dodger team store there. It's gotta be tough trying to market T-shirts when the only starting position player you've had longer than a year is Cesar Izturis. I gotta think Nomar's gonna be big here. He's local, he's Mexican, and he's got charisma.
