Mark Prior exercised a clause in his contract which lets him void the final year and go to salary arbitration instead:

Prior's deal, agreed to in 2001 after he was drafted, allowed him to void the contract after 2004 or 2005, but only if he had accumulated enough service time to be eligible for arbitration. He just missed having enough service time after 2004.

It was a great deal for Prior. If he turns out to be a flop, he still gets a few million dollars. If he's great, he files for arbitration and gets even more. Maybe the Cubs will sign him to a three year deal at a higher rate to avoid a fight.

this is clever on his part (his agent's part?). he must know he has limited milage left in the majors, and he might as well grab a few extra bucks before hangin it up.

Yep, bad mechanics and steroids had everything to do with a collision on the basepaths, abuse from a prehistoric manager, and a 117-mph line drive to the elbow.

Why do people automatically believe the problem is steroids? Last week Mike Marshall, an expert on pitching mechanics said Prior's problem was his delivery. Marshall should know; a PHD in the physical aspects of pitching and a Cy Young award. I believe his take. Who actually drafts these stupid contracts?

I think DC's comment was tongue in cheek - Prior was fine last year before that line drive. His K/IP was well over 9.

Both Prior and Halladay should be pretty high on people's radar's this upcoming year - both had great seasons sidelined by freak injuries.

Dave,

I think you are right about the Cubs signing him to a longer deal (if they don't trade them). I don't believe Hendry has gone to arbitration - - he avoids it like the plague.
