Glaus Flies to the Blue Jays
The Blue Jays and Diamondbacks completed the deal for Troy Glaus today.
The Arizona Diamondbacks traded power-hitting Troy Glaus and top minor league shortstop prospect Sergio Santos to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday for gold glove second baseman Orlando Hudson and pitcher Miguel Batista.
The Blue Jays were not exactly weak at third base. Toronto third basemen posted a .361 OBA with 52 extra-base hits in 2005. With Overbay at first, Koskie may move to DH or be packaged to another team.
Glaus is one of my favorites, especially before injuries took their toll on his playing time. His resurgence at the end of the 2002 season helped the Angels to their only World Championship. He'll bring some needed power to the Blue Jays lineup.
The Diamondbacks are getting a fine defensive second baseman in Orlando Hudson. He led American League second sackers in fielding win shares in 2005. He's no offensive threat, however. Batista became expendable with the acquistion of B.J. Ryan. Batista came to closing late in his career and did a decent job. He doesn't blow people away; his 6.5 K per 9 in 2005 doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in the 9th inning. It looks to me like a pretty good trade for Toronto.
Correction: Arizona is getting Hudson.

I think you meant the DBacks are getting Hudson.
I imagine the Jays will try to move Hinske and Hillenbrand now. Not sure who would want them. Hinske got a big payday after his rookie year, and hasn't done much since. Hillenbrand's an OK hitter, but also, nothing special. Corner guys who hit in the.270's with moderate power and little patience are a dime a dozen these days.
They should probably hold onto Koskie--he and Troy Glaus make an awesome DH/3B platoon. Glaus can DH home games to give his knee a rest on the turf.
imagine if they somehow get roger clemens...........waaaoooooowwwwwwww... they will win the world serise for sure
imagine if they got pedro martinez, randy johnson, and mariano rivera...they might even sweep the world series...sorry i had to :)
i like glaus a lot too, but hudson is WAY underrated. bad defense will undermine the new pitching aquisitions.
its weird too: i always heard that the jays had a lot of minor league talent that was going to arrive 2006-2007, but then why would they need to be so aggressive in overpaying for free agents??
It's funny...BP had an article lauding the Jays moves of acquiring Ryan, Burnett and Overbay as being reflective of a larger scheme to pick up ground-ball inducing pitchers to play in front of an outstanding infield defense, anchored by Hudson and bolstered by Overbay. And yet here we are...unless Glaus is going to DH the whole time, and they have something up their sleeves regarding 2B, it's hard to see how their plan really gels. I know I won't miss Hudson snagging ground balls up the middle.
This trade leaves me with two questions:
1) What teams need a 3B?
2) What 2B are available for the Blue Jays to acquire?
Many reports had reported that the Blue Jays had three 3B. Dave Pinto acurately reported that the lue Jays actually now have four 3B - Hinske (how easily we all forget about him), Hillenbrand, Koskie (who was coming back from an injury last season), and Glaus. I know this is the AL and Hillenbrand can play numerous corner IF and OF positions, but since they acquired a 1B this offseason, too, they have five guys for two positions (three if including the DH). Since Hillenbrand can help in the OF, he is not trade bait. Since Glaus has problems with injuries, he is more of a DH (I almost said DL) - though he believes he is better in the field (even with his defensive liability). So 3B is between Hinske and Koskie (or rotating and allowing them to rotate at 1B with Overbay). I do think this trade was a bad move because of the logjam and because they gave up a good 2B. I could foresee Koskie or Hinske being traded to a team in need of 3B (and the Pirates are one of those teams in need - but the Pirates might need to part with Castillo, who I don't think the Pirates will trade AND I do not think the Blue Jays will take Freddy Sanchez for one of them. We'll see. The Phillies are trying to rid themselves of David Bell. But I don't see him as a good player on the Pirates either.) Likewise, I am not sure what other teams are in contention for a 3B. It seems like most teams are set. So, to me, this is a bad trade with the logjam at 3B, the past injuries of Glaus, and the loss of a good defensive second baseman. Where are the Blue Jays going to find a good 2B?
They have faith in Aaron Hill at 2B. Get rid of Hinske, even if all you get in return is a 28-year-old AA prospect.
Hinske signed a big contract after his rookie year, so I doubt anyone would take him now. Hillenbrand will probably get traded (the Giants, maybe?), and Hinske becomes an overpaid sub. Creating a logjam doesn't make this a bad deal if the some of the parts are clearly inferior to the others. The bad deals were giving Koskie and Hinske three year contracts. Getting Glaus takes playing time away from Hinske and Hillenbrand, as well as at bats away from Hudson who can't hit a lick. Money owed to Glaus aside, this is a good deal for the Jays.
yanks will probaly get hinske and he will hit 30 homers and sink the jays.
jays should put glaus at dh to save him from injury
tony flynn is a tru looser

I agree tony flynn is a looser
Hill's Fielding may not compare with the exceptional Hudson's but in the few games Hill played at 2B his fielding stats are pretty close to Hudson
