More on Vazquez

The Arizona Republic has more on the Vazquez rumors. It looks like Jon Garland isn't the likely pitcher:

But an American League source intimated Tuesday that neither Garland nor Contreras was likely to be a part of the deal.

That would leave Hernandez, the Cuban right-hander with four World Series rings and a reputation as a big-game pitcher.

Of course, the downside of having a big game pitcher is he's pretty useless unless you play big games!

The real trade is for Chris Young. Chris is a centerfielder who gets on base and has shown power in the minors. He'll be 22 in 2006.

Even though having a solid starter in Vasquez is a good thing to have, how is Brandon McCarthy going to fit into the mix?

Look for the White Sox to try to trade one of several pitchers (Garland, Contreras, or McCarthy most likely) plus Juan Uribe for Miguel Tejada.

This would certainly offset the loss of Young.

That'd be a steal if they got Vazquez for Young. Young hasn't shown an ability to hit for average or control the strike zone in 4 years in the low minors. He's a good prospect but not indispensable, especially since they have two more highly rated OF prospects ahead of him.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but how does having an ISO of .100 in the last 2 years not show the ability to control the strike zone? Yes the batting averages do show the need to make a little more contact, but there are many guys who have been successful despite that in the majors.

Also, Luis Vizcaino is being thrown in in this trade and $5 million is headed to the White Sox.

White Sox fans, have fun with Vazquez's flyball tendencies.

And it looks like with two openings in the bullpen, McCarthy will slot into one of them.

I think Freddy Garcia will be shipped out soon, the $19M he is owed thru 2007 can be used towards keeping Jon Garland long-term, who is several years younger.

The ChiSox have doled out $105.5 this offseason in picking up Vazquez's deal, part of Thome's, and resigning Konerko. That's alot of dough.

Vasquez demanded a trade so he could be closer to his family in Puerto Rico. Is a 2000 mile plane flight really that much better than a 3000 mile flight? Isn't that about an hour and a half shorter, or maybe two hours shorter tops? That's still a four hour flight plus maybe even more if you need to transfer.

Well, with Brandon McCarthy as a good #5 starter, I would predict that the sox just have javier to trade him away somewhere else. I cant really see the need for another starter.

Michael, it's less likely that Vazquez would need to transfer to fly from Chicago to Puerto Rico because O'Hare is a big airport that serves flights to and from many major cities and countries. Also, consider the fact that there's at least one less time zone change to deal with (I forget if Phoenix is in the same time zone as the west coast or in the next time zone over). That's less jet lag for his family to deal with.
