Renteria a Brave
The Red Sox traded Edgar Renteria to the Atlanta Braves for third baseman Andy Marte. This is probably not the end of the deal, as Marte may go to Tampa Bay for Lugo. More later, but right now the Red Sox have traded their starting shortstop and their shortstop prospect, leaving them with a big hole in the middle of the infield.

Both the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald are saying that the Red Sox aren't going to flip Marte for a shortstop. Of course the Globe also reported that the Sox had resigned Theo too, so take it with a grain of salt.
Gammons on WEEI agrees, Marte is not going to be traded.
The big hole was to Renteria's left, where routine ground outs went to become hits. Charles Bradford should personally call John Schuerholz to thank him.
I can't believe it. The Sox giving up on Renteria after only one season. To top it off they are sending a bunch of cash to Atlanta to pay his salary. Marte has a lot of potential but they need a quality shortstop to fill this gaping hole. I would like to see Marte stay with Boston. Maybe they can trade Manny for a guy who will hit 10 homeruns, drive in 35 and maybe steal 15 bases- yeah that fills his loss. Typical Red Sox moves. Dump the young guys who have a proven track record and go get some high priced, over-the-hill free agent who will fall apart. Maybe they should resign Nomar! That would fit the profile for sure. This team is a ship waiting to sink. Bring back Theo, NOW!
I'm shocked that a GM as great as John Schuerholz would agree to take on $18M of Renteria's deal and still give up Andy Marte.
I'm really interested to see what the Sawx do at short, their isn't a great SS available on the FA market, Dustin Peroia isn't ready for ML duty yet.
Maybe we could be in for a Boston encore for Nomar. Nah...
Is it possible that they are thinking of bringing Nomar back? Is he physically able to play short?
From what I've read they made a deal with the Braves not to send Marte to the Devil Rays for Lugo. If the 3-way deal had gone through Marte would have gone to the Rays. A report said the Sox were looking at Alex Rodriguez for the Marlins to fill the hole at short. He's a free agent and they wouldn't have to make another trade to fill the position. This off season is ridiculous!!
Darren: It's Alex Gonzalez from the Marlins :)
Oops...I guess I should read what I post. We don't want A-Fraud!!!
Marte was never going to have a place to play in Atlanta. Chipper Jones is signed through 2009. If true that the Red Sox are paying $4mil a year on Renteria's salary, then the Braves just got him for what they paid Furcal LAST YEAR and have him through 2009. Pretty good deal for the Braves. Sox fans shouldn't be too upset. The Sox stole Mark Loretta from the Padres. A .300 life time second baseman for a .240 lifetime backup catcher.
I don't think Sox fans (myself included) are upset. I'm quite happy with the trade. The Sox have a number of good young pitchers and outfielders in their system, but nobody who you'd describe as a top prospect at a corner infield position. This gives them that, and gets rid of the over-paid and under-achieving Renteria. I don't care about the money, that isn't Boston's problem. The question now is can they hold on to their minor league talent and still get a suitable starting shortstop at the major league level.
As a Sox fan, I think this is incredibly sad. You don't win championships by signing guys to $40m contracts and then tossing them out the following. Granted, Rent didn't adjust to Boston at all, but this is the sort of thing you're supposed to think about before signing the contract. 'course, what we're probably seeing is Lucciano ditching the things he didn't like about Theo, just like Theo ditched the things he didn't like about Duquette! But, it's no fun paying $11m ($3.7m/year for 3 years) to get rid of a mistake, even if you get a decent prospect in return! Money doesn't grow on trees. Even the Yankees are watching their pursestrings these days!
you can say what you want about the braves, they are always in the hunt. if they had a closer this year they could have been in the world series.
