Afternoon Trades

The Braves and Diamondbacks traded players, giving up opposite poles of the battery. Arizona sent two pitchers to Atlanta for catcher Johnny Estrada. I take it this means the Diamondbacks aren't as high on their catching prospects as they were a year ago.

The Braves get Oscar Villarreal who had a great 2003 but has not pitched much at the major league level since. Cormeir has a 6.21 ERA in 124 2/3 innings pitched in the majors. Seems like both clubs were just dumping spare parts.

The Pirates continue to trim their bevy of lefties, sending Mark Redman to the Royals for sophomore Jonah Bayliss and a player to be determined. Bayliss has good strikeout numbers but walks a few too many. Like the deal above, this is not going to make or break either team.

Man, being traded from the Pirates to the Royals. Baseball has not been beddy beddy good to Mark Redman.

I am a big Seattle Mariner fan. Been a very disappointing season the last couple of years. Which pitcher available would be the best fit for Seattle? They are talking with Kevin Millbrook but I was hoping for a better pitcher if available. And what about a DH like Mike Piazza or Frank Thomas?

Well, Redman does have a ring from the '03 Marlins, so don't go feeling too bad for him.

It also looks like the Red Sox will trade Doug Mirabelli to the Padres for Mark Loretta. Pedroia could likely use some more time at AAA, so getting a year of Loretta is not a bad haul for a backup catcher (though one who is probably good enough to start for a lot of teams).

OK, good point about Redman.

Good luck to Johnny Estrada in the desert. Hope he rebounds from the cheap shot forearm to the head he got from Erstad. Catchers earn their money a helluva lot more that 1st basement do.
