Trading Abreu

There's lots of speculation that the Phillies will trade Bobby Abreu:

The Phillies say they are not shopping Abreu. They don't have to. Every team in baseball already knows that he could be had for pitching help.

It's not that the Phils don't like Abreu. They do. He's available because he could fetch some value as the Phils look to fortify their pitching staff.

The Red Sox are among the teams interested, and Abreu would be a perfect replacement for Manny. Since becoming a regular in 1998, Abreu never posted less than 23 win shares in a season. He's garnered 216 win shares in that time, an average of 27 a season. Manny, over the same period, earned 227 win shares, a little over 28 a season. On top of that, Bobby is two years younger than Manny, and you can see why Boston is interested.

Still, that's a lot of wins to trade for pitching. I suspect Gillick will do a good job getting value for Abreu if indeed the Phillies decide to go in that direction.
227 to 216

I'm convinced that the only way Gillick trades Abreu is if he gets a good starting pitcher in return. Like a "decent" no. 1 or a really good no. 2.

re: abreu for youkilis

actually the right trade is Bobby Abreu for Kevin Youkilis and maybe a pitching prospect.

The Phillies have had a huge hole at 3B since the departure of Scott Rolen, who earned 30 win shares a season approximately based on offense and defense at the premiere defensive position during 1997-2001.

Abreu earns that number of win shares in RF, but his win shares can be replaced by a RF with 15-20 win shares more easily than the phillies can come up with a 3B; David Bell this year earned about 4 win shares.

Youkilis can come in and secure 3B for years, earn 20-30 win shares a season, get a .400 OBA, and create the NL's best infield, Youkilis, Rollins, Utley and Howard, offensively and defensively, and one which will last for ten years or more.

His path is now blocked in Boston by Mike Lowell, who has several years left, and it is obvious the Bosox won't play him.

Abreu for Youkilis.

who the hell is youkilis. that is probably the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Abreu is a perennial all star. Everyone else is talking about trades for manny ramirez or Mark prior. Youkilis doesent even start because he sucks.
