Orioles Debate

The Palm Beach Post floats a Carlos Delgado rumor:

Marlins first baseman Carlos Delgado could replace Rafael Palmeiro in Baltimore if Orioles officials — currently divided over the idea — agree to give up a top pitching prospect, a baseball source said Thursday.

The Marlins and Orioles have not yet discussed a trade, but Baltimore's front office has talked about it since at least the general managers' meetings in California last week.

"Baltimore is seriously debating whether to get Delgado, but they are split over whether to pursue it,'' said the source, who was briefed on Baltimore's strategies.

I'm curious as to the nature of the debate; who is for it and why and who is against it and why. Is the debate over just money, or over a strategy of how to build a team. Does one side want the big slugger while the otherside wants to use the money to build a more balanced team? I guess we'll get a clue as we see the team take shape over the winter.

All I have to say, David, is that the new link in the end here...that funky Amazon pop-up window...is pretty sweet.

And I wonder which prospects the O's would have to give up to get Delgado. They probably don't want to part with pitching now that Mazzone's on board, but pitching has long been the Marlins' M.O.

Regarding pitching prospects, I would think that given Mazzone's history of taking pig ears and making them into a reliable pitcher, the O's might feel that they can trade pitching (that, of course, Mazzone is not so high on but who have trade value otherwise) to the Marlins (or ultimately to whoever) and then pick up someone off the scrap heap that Mazzone likes and let him do his magic.

That could also be the debate, the Marlins may want pitching since they are losing Burnett but the Orioles have been lacking in pitching for years and so cannot really afford to give up what they do have. So do they drink the kool-mazzone-aid or not?

However, given their miseries over the recent past, what else can they do? They have to take the leap and go for offense and hope Mazzone can perform his miracles.

Hayden Penn or Adam Loewen are most likely the pitching prospect the Fish would want. Penn was linked to the Burnett rumors last summer. Personally, I don't think the O's should trade either for Delgado and they definately shouldn't consider it if the Marlins aren't paying a very significant portion of Delgado's contract.
