Bidding on Burnett

The opening bid on A.J. Burnett is a pretty good one. The Blue Jays are offering five years at $10 million a year. Given what okay starters were getting last season when there were a number of pitchers in the market, I expect both the salary number and the length of contract to go higher.

that's a crazy amount of money for a .500 pitcher who's already had arm surgery.

You expect the length of the contract to go higher? Seriously? 5 years for a questionable body and mind is thru the roof. I can't imagine anyone, short of the idiot Phillips doing his spoof news conferences, offering a longer deal.

But what is $50M after you take out all those Canadian taxes? It's not really equivalent to $50M from an American team, is it?

If I were the Red Sox, I'd offer an incentive-based contract... sort of like Wells got... where a bonus is based on the number of starts made. Burnett has been great when he's healthy, and is surprisingly close to the top of the majors in DIPS in his full seasons. But there's the injury problem (seems like he's played 2.5 full seasons over the last 5 years) and the fact that he'd be moving from the NL to the AL so his stats would take a bit of a dive.

is it high? is it low? IT'S MARKET VALUE, regardless of how stupid that is. with this group of guys, and history both positive and negative....the blue jays (or rangers, or tigers, etc) would be doing themselves a favor in getting this guy.......as long as everything works out....errrr

Re Market value, maybe. So far there is one offer at one moment in time. That's not a market. Did Arod's Texas contract constitute market value? No, there was no competition, or market, at those prices. Just the lone sucker. I believe his market is around 10m, but like Dan I am shocked multiple teams would consider 5 year deals.
