Asburn for Hall

Balls, Sticks and Stuff is launching a campaign to get Richie Asburn elected to the Hall of Fame as an announcer. He even has a campaign button!

Update: Greg Andrew correctly points out that this is not really an election to the Hall. It is to help determine the winner of the Frick award.

David - Don't want to be a stick-in-the-mud, but since they describe it accurately as winning the Frick Award (as opposed to being elected to the Hall. which it's not), why change it? Especially since it's extremely confusing this way, given that Ashburn is already a member.

Besides that, vote for Herb Score instead.

My guess is that Niehaus wins it. I was surprised when Coleman beat him out last year.

Actually, I should say Coleman beat Niehaus out this year for the award. Niehaus has been the media fave for the award for quite a while, but somehow he's never bagged it. Has he p.o.ed some of the voters?

And sorry to dump on Ashburn, but he was a boring, somnolent announcer. He did work well with Kalas, who would no doubt vote for his old buddy.

Speaking of Ford Frick, I saw the man himself on one of GSN's ancient What's My Line episodes. Moderator John Daly actually asked Frick about baseball's declining popularity (in 1956!)

Of course, major league attendance was then stagnating and the minors were folding up in a very scary fashion. Frick brushed off Daly's question, and the game has survived another fifty years. Even the minors have staged an impressive comeback.

The Frick Award is, though, the only avenue to the Hall for announcers, so winners are commonly referred to as "Hall of Fame" announcers.
