Top of the Ninth in Houston

The Astros bring in a tired Brad Lidge to start the ninth and try to get the save. Matt Murton singles on the first pitch. Ben Grieve pinch hits for Perez.

Update: Grieve strikes out on a 1-2 pitch. Lidge kept the ball low and inside and Ben couldn't handle it.

Update: Todd Walker pinch hits. He'll try to do his best Kirk Gibson.

Update: Walker grounds to short. Bruntlett drops the ball at second and Murton is safe. Cubs have men on 1st and 2nd with one out.

Update: Phillies win 9-3. Lidge gets a ground out to short, but the Cubs have men on 2nd and 3rd with two out for Macias. Doesn't Dusty have a pinch hitter for this guy?

Update: Macias lines out to second to end the game. The Astros win the game 6-4 and wins the NL Wild Card by a game over the Phillies. Congratulations to the Astros on another great comeback season!

Great for the Stros and a second straight run at the Braves in the playoffs. Last year they cancelled the Braves in the playoffs but lost the regular season series 5-1.

Anything can happen in the playoffs though. I have my seats for Sat and Sun (if needed) here in Houston!

The Stros also signed Biggio for next season. Drayton def. trying to make sure he finishes his career as a Stro.

Another of Purpura's champagne-drenched locker-room announcements was that Bagwell will definitely be on the postseason roster and will DH in the World Series if the Astros get that far.

Bagwell had a few key pinch-hits late in the season but didn't really hit the ball all that hard. It'll be interesting to see what he can do in the playoffs.

One more note on Biggio: he now needs 205 hits to get to three thousand and, I believe, certain HOF induction. Nobody eligible who's made that mark has ever been denied entrance to Cooperstown. I can't believe Biggio would be the first excluded.

It'll be almost impossible for him to get 205 next year. He hasn't gone over 200 hits in a season since 1998.

But if he stays healthy and maintains his current level of production, he should end 2006 at fifty or fewer hits shy of the mark. I have to think he would come back for one more season to get 3,000.

biggio should be a lock for cooperstown if he retired after THIS season.

the getting to 3000 hits is just gilding the lily

he is getting more crawford box HRs than before, but not walking as moch and is GIDP more.

so i guess chris burke will be back in LF next year. but that's ok - he's GOOD with the glove out there and his bat is coming around
