Santana Makes His Move

Johan Santana did indeed make his bid for Cy Young today, shutting out the Chicago White Sox for eight innings, striking out 13 along the way. He lowers his ERA to 3.05, .03 behind Kevin Millwood. His ERA against the White Sox this season is 0.86. The question is will the voters give the award to a pitcher with only 15 or 16 wins?

Sure hope so, Santana's been a lot better than Millwood this year.

any pitcher who can't win 17 games isn't good enuf, you know that (see clemens, roger) and how a pitchers teammates do don't got nothin to do with a pitchers W/L - the question is - does the pitcher know how to WIN, not have a low ERA, walks and a lot of Ks.

so no cy for johan or roger

It could happen. He will have a few more starts left, and cound end up with 16 wins. Remember Randy Johnson finished second in the NL Cy Young race last year after posting a 16-14 record, much worse than Santana's this year. And, like Johnson last season, Santana will lead the league in strikeouts.

I agree that Santana should win the award. He leads the AL in WHIP, strikeouts, OBA, and opp slugging %. Not to mention he is essentially tied for 1st in ERA. Plus a 14-7 record isn't shabby.

That said the voters will give it to Colon unless he falters his next 3 starts. He's got good numbers too. Throw in the fact he'll likely win 20 games and I think he's a shoo-in. It's a shame voters care about wins so much.

Mariano Rivera is #1 in the James/Neyer Cy Young
Predictor.
