Solo Home Run Monday

The solo shot is the preferred method of scoring tonight in Cincinnati. The Reds lead the Giants 3-2, and all five runs came on solo shots by Winn, Linden, Griffey, Dunn and Kearns.

If you told me at the beginning of the year that Griffey would be hitting this well, I would have assumed the Reds would be a winning team. The quality of their pitching just can't match their offense.

The Reds are scoring 5.09 RPG (before tonight), but their team ERA is 5.29. Ouch! Any team scoring over 5 per game, should be above .500 IMHO. They'rer scoring almost as much as the Cardinals! (5.08 RPG for St Louis)

A few of the teams the Reds offense is better than...

Athletics - 4.85 RPG
Angels - 4.78 RPG
Astros - 4.24 RPG
Blue Jays - 4.95 RPG
Braves - 4.79 RPG
White Sox - 4.82 RPG

...unless I missed something, it seems only the Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers, and Cardinals, are scoring better than Cincinnati.

Nice to see Griffey healthy for a whole year. Pity the pitching isn't up there.

The Reds have approximately one good starting pitcher. Why not deal Kearns for a second?

Roto Authority: I think, especially after this offseason of overspending, that a premium is going to be put on starting pitching -- I think very few teams are going to give up a legitimately good starting pitcher for just Kearns, with his injury problems and the fact that he's regressed every year since his huge 2003...

Is there anyone in the Reds farm system top-prospect wise? I can't think of anyone off the top of my head. The Cubs got solid Jon Lieber with Brant Brown. The Mariners got Jesse Foppert, who has potential, for just Randy Winn. Maybe the Reds could grab Jason Johnson or Mike Maroth or someone on that level.
