Palmeiro and the Hall

I just did an interview where I was asked about Rafael Palmeiro and the Hall of Fame. One good thing about the Hall of Fame voting is the five year cooling off period before you get to vote for a candidate. Mostly it's so that a player who was really buddy-buddy with the media doesn't get in because everyone likes him. The five years gives you time to more objectively look at a player's career.

I think this will work towards Palmeiro's favor. As time goes by, people will remember his stats more than this scandal, especially if Palmeiro tells us what he took that caused the positive test. My guess is that Palmeiro won't get in on the first couple of ballots, but he won't be kept out of the Hall by the writers permanently. After all, there are probably a few amphetamine users that were elected.

Then there's the whole issue of perjury before Congress. If that catches on, it could derail his Hall chances.

Hmm... so, it sounds like Palmeiro currently is not allowed to tell us what he tested positive for. But, once he retires from baseball, I imagine he would no longer be bound by the player agreement. Anyone know if this is true? From the quotes I've read, it sounds like he knows what he tested positive for and he would tell the media if it were okay to do so.

Well, if nothing else, MLB(PA) certainly knows how to create a media circus :)

I think the lying in front of Congress too would be a BIG minus for him to get into the Hall of Fame. As with Pete Rose, these people are not above standards and should not be put on pedestals. We need set examples for our kids and allowing them to see there are consequences for their actions and that these people are not above the law.

These people who have shown they are not the "Ideal" player should not be allowed into the Hall of Fame. Using steroids is not an acceptable way in the sports field. He told us is "Supposed Story" on how he got the steroids in his system (to me which seems a crock!). That alone brings the standards down! Telling the American Fans that it's ok to lie.

I hope that we don’t forget these people who have fallen from grace and that we continue to let them know that this is highly unacceptable. Their names should not be allowed to stay on these lists for getting to the Hall of Fame or any other prestigious honor that is a disgrace to others who so rightly deserved it.

"Because he took them, some young players may have been compelled to take them as well. And maybe some high school boys and girls, too."

Richard Justice....This part is such nonsense....how many kids smoke cigaretes and will die due to lung cancer in the years a head ?? Richard tell us how many kids have died of steroid use....tell us how many kids will die this year playing football or driving drunk...gezeeeezzzzzzzzz

Good write, but leave out the BS

In my Opinion, the bottom line (supposing congress doesn't completely destroy his life after baseball) in 'Raff' getting into the hall of fame has to lie with weather or not one considers his records to be tainted and fraudulant. He may have 3000 hits and 500 homeruns but I beleive those are simply tainted stats. Steroids are steroids, they are if nothing else but placibo, they are motivation to work out more, and they do give an edge there, no matter what. His hits are fake, they don't count. He is no hall of famer.

If I were Raffy I would have another test taken right now...if you are not taking steroids it will prove it...silence is not the way to handle this if you are innocent...something just dosent add up, he either had everyone fooled or is just not the Raffy that we all thought he was...with that said I think there will be more to come ie: more suspensions, where theres smoke there is fire and something is burning...Thats why I think Bonds is sitting out, as long as he is...as long as he's not playing he cant be tested, and he has alot to lose if he is caught using steroids...I think he is using the knee injury to buy time and make darn sure he is clean when he puts a uni back on to go for the HR record
