Bell and Brinkman

Buddy Bell got an earful from umpire Joe Brinkman last night and didn't like it.

Bell questioned a call on Berroa — complaining that a called strike was in fact too low — when he said Brinkman responded with a profanity-laced tirade.

“We’re supposed to sit back,” Bell said, “and we’re supposed to say, ‘OK, whatever they want to say.’ He can call me whatever he wants and get away with it?

“To be honest with you, there’s a little bit of a double-standard when umpires can do whatever they want and you can’t do anything back to them.”

According to the article, the exchange between manager and umpire could be heard by the fans. Was anyone at the game last night? What exactly was said?

I don't know what was said at the game, but is this something that might be addressed in the offseason? A lot of people seem to be complaining about umpires overstepping their bounds recently.

One example I can think of is David Wells getting thrown out by the second base umpire a few weeks ago.

One of the commentators on ESPN Radio mentioned that the umps are getting more out of control as we get farther away from the mass layoffs a few years back. Since Sandy Alderson left MLB for the Padres, nobody is keeping control of the umps, whom I sure everybody agrees should be neither seen nor heard.

On the other hand, unless I mis-remember, arguing balls and strikes is grounds for immediate ejection - maybe instead of cursing at players and managers, umpires could instead just enforce that rule once or twice at the beginning of next season to let everyone know that argument on those things isn't going to be tolerated. That'd probably save everyone a lot of grief.

im not sure of the umpires name but he was umping 1st base on June 5, 2006 for the Rockies and Marlins. he made 2 calls that were CLEARLY incorrect. many bad calls have been made upon the Rockies but these are just apsurd!!
