Losing to Tampa

Does a team that goes 3-7 against Tampa Bay deserve to make the playoffs? I don't think so. They're a combined 3-10 vs. TB and KC, the two worst teams in the league. If they were 10-3 against these two doormats, the Yankees would be in first place by two games.

If it wasn't for one 13 run inning the yanks would have been swept by the lowly rays. This is a fantasy roster gone bad... They still may make the playoffs but this team is not a championship caliber team.

to take the other side of the argument, if i were the yankees, I'd rather go 3-7 against the lowly Rays rather than teams like Boston and Baltimore.

of course you want to win all the time, but you get my point. Games against teams right ahead of you in the standings matter so much more esp. now heading into the All-Star break.

To me it's the "pressure" games/series that determine the real pennant winners.

/playing devil's advocate
//not a yankees fan... nice going DRays! :)

Well...the Yanks are 1-5 against Baltimore and 4-5 against Boston thus far. In terms of series wins and losses, against their contending AL opponents, the Yanks are 2-8 (includes, Texas, Angels, Toronto, Minnesota, Boston and Baltimore). Yikes! Overall, by series, they are 10-13-1. So despite their overall record being a winning one (as fuelled by sweeps of Detroit, Oakland, Seattle, Pittburgh and Chicago), they are more often losers of series than winners.

Before the All-Star break they will face off against the Mets, Baltimore (5 times), and recently-hot Cleveland and Detroit. I think they'd be lucky to make it to the All-Star break at .500. Depending on your feelings for the Yanks, it could be either rather ugly, or a beautiful thing to behold.

To answer your question, Dave, no.
